Mini Starter suggestions? Intsalled a ND and heat soaks - 10/09/12 02:16 AM

I purchased a new Nippodenso starter from Mancini Racing on my 472 Hemi with TTi 2 1/8" headers. When the engine is cold, she cranks perfectly fine. Park her and let her heat soak and she does the infamous first whirrrr... then pauses and then after about what seems a secodn will crank at normal speed.
Redundat engine ground straps and clean solid power connections so I am suspecting a new starter that doesn't live up to expectations.

On my '69 six pack 440 I installed a "lowly" 440 Source mini starter and it repeatedly cranks fast regardless of how hot she gets and i run Doug's headers with 2" primaries..

Suggestions? I am thinking getting another 440 source or did I just get lucky?!?!

Ive had great success with a plane ole mini starter from the parts store. I'll have to look it up to be sure but IIRC it was for an early 90's truck with a V8. I wrapped it in the heat shield stuff just as a precaution. I purchased a new one instead of a reman for around $100 from Autozone. And I now have a LIFETIME warranty at any autozone in America and I dont even have to have a reciept with me. Autozone stores computer systems are connected nationally (unlike Advance, Napa, etc) and they just look you up by your ph#. I have so much stuff on my car that is under warranty at autozone the list is too long to put on here. Just a few are brake pads, calipers, brake hoses, alternator, starter, battery, headlight switch, plug wires, distributor, fuel sending unit, and most of that stuff is lifetime warranty.

Hey Roe, Thanks for the heads up on Autozone... problem is where I am , Hawaii,, there is no Autozone... I'll ask O'Reilly's, NAPA and Carquest to see if they offer the same deal... thanks for the suggestion!

I agree on the parts store mini starter. Mine works perfect. It was about $75 after the core return. I got it at Autozone but I'm sure any one would have it....

You just have to remove the extension for the wire hook ups.

Yes please buy one local and help your economy. 90 dakota is what I always ask for, don't matter I don't think on the motor as the V6 uses the same starter as the V8.

I use the 440 source ministarter on my 440 block/500 stroker with Hooker super comp headers. Finished the build this past spring. No problems, no heat soak, so far.

Their starter is the same mini starter anyone else sells for the most part. However, they don't offer a lifetime waaranty on theirs like the parts houses do.

My first starter on my build was the 440source unit which died after maybe 10 hrs of engine running? I replaced it with a mini starter from AutoZone ($60 after core charge) and hasn't had any issues since ( I have beat the hell outta it too). Also has lifetime warranty.

Sometimes the parts houses are the best place to get things like this due to the warranty and keeping them in stock locally.

Just ask for starter from 92 Dodge RAM with 5.2 motor. This will work or any early 90s Dodge pickup with V6/V8 motor...all the same.

Good luck

^^ this ... the only reason to buy something like this online from a company thousands of miles away is because you live at the end of the earth ...

Yes it's out there but they do have cars and trucks out there.

Even if they have to get it from the mainland it will still have a lifetime warranty ... buy 2 , also have a spare on hand and exchange the bad one for a new one ...

Got a part number for a NEW mini starter from AutoZone? Need one for my 273 Commando. Got a couple gift cards to use there.

Thanks for all the input everyone.
I will definitely look into getting one locally.
I ordered the starter from Mancini since I was making a large purchase of parts and it would simplify getting parts... Little did I know a new starter would have issues.
Thanks again!
