Factory mis stamped engine/trans engine code?

Factory mis stamped engine/trans engine code? - 10/06/12 07:40 PM

My charger is numbers matching but the factory misstamped the engine and trans as an F code vice H code. All the other numbers match the car perfectly and the car is an H code 69 383 magnum 4 speed car. Was this something that was common? I know that the QA was lacking back then but just thought I'd check with others on this since it was surprising. The date code on the engine matches the cars build date as well.

I had a '68 New Yorker once that I traded to a friend. He pulled the engine for a '68 Charger he was working on. Now, I'm not familiar with 1968 engine stampings, but he told me the engine was stamped to be a TNT/Magnum engine, but that letter was crossed out and the correct letter for the 350-horse 440 followed.

Is your Charger a pre-Jan. '69 car with the full VIN# stamped on it?

& you're saying it has XP29F9B123456 stamped on a 383 block & your VIN# is XP29H9B123456?

I've seen a 440 block with the same deal - GOT a pic? I think I have a pic of the 440, I'll see if I can find it. (bet they're same day, on the line)

The 413 in my 64 300 was stamped T for 63, then over stamped with a V for 64. Everything about the engine was 63, 4 bolt valve covers, casting numbers, etc.

I have a 68 hemi 4-speed that is missing the same digit, 5th from the end, same plant.

Interesting - I had a feeling that there would be others. You'd think that they would be a little more particular with it. To answer an earlier question - it does have the full VIN on it. I was thinking of selling the car but want to hold on it - it has a lot of rust but is a nice color and options combo.

To: supercuda, the stamp on the Engine ID pad only tells you how the engine was built and for which model year. So your '64 left the factory with a leftover '63 engine.
Chrysler had terrible inventory control and they had a habit of finding a bunch of blocks or heads or engines that had been "hiding" in the corner of a warehouse somewhere and putting them in the next car down the line. Remember, these are the guys that built engines with one or more rod or main journals, piston or lifter with repair sizes.
They salvaged everything they could.

on my 1972 Cuda 340 - the vin plate is coded BS23G4xxxxx, while it should be BS23H4xxxxx
vin says it's a 318 while i have the original 340 in it, build sheet also denotes BS23G but all the specs point to the 340 and the vin numbers agree on the block

The 4 in that position is the model year, 1974.

But - The VIN you listed - "BS23H4xxxxx" is two digits short. So, what is the whole thing?

G & H are right next to each other on a keyboard, so it would be an easy typo. Can you get clear photos of the engine & transmission VIN stamps & the engine serial number on the front of the block? It is right below the driver's side head surface.
