Engine mount bosses - 09/21/12 06:47 PM
I don't do a lot of small blocks and we have a 318 I built years ago that we are using in a 66 A100. The boss on the passenger side is wrong for all the small block mounts I have (5 sets) I have a 61 poly and the bosses are correct, the only other LA's I have are 360's and they are like the 318. Are there year differences in the bosses or pass car/truck differences?
I am welding up a mount but was curious about the cast bosses on the block. I know there are big block differences as to how the lugs are machined and of coarse big block A-bodies the left side is different.

it is my understanding that all 318's are the same, and even the magnum has a set to bolt up the old LA style.
360 mounts are different on one side, but the same on the other, but don't remember which is which.
perhaps you have the sides mixed up?

And here is the older LA motors with 2 bosses in the rear and 1 up front. This is what the mounts I have are made for.

Is it worth pointing out that a 66 318 is a poly?

All the 68-72 A body stuff I've dealt with uses the two bosses at the front and 1 at the rear, either upper or lower depending on block.
340-360 drivers side is more narrow than the 318 mounts. The lugs on the block are not as far apart.

I have a 65 273 and an 87 318. The 273 has the htree hole mounts and the 318 has 4 as you have found out, so yes there are two different setups. The old DC engines book mentioned it and has drawings on how to mod the old mount to fit the new block, but someone said the drawings were wrong, so YMMV there.

Since you aren't specific about what you are actually working on, as in what engine in which chassis. Good luck with it.
If it's not a car chassis have fun.
Happy to help and provide worthless input!

Since there is still confussion;
1 I modified a mount for my need, there is no problem, I do not need luck. I put a nailhead in a 54 Ford, built T-buckets from scratch (home made rails), back halfed cars, built front suspensions from junk, and have help build some of the nicer show cars in the midwest (check out 70 Cougar Eleminator at the Ford Museum. Adding a ear to a engine mount is nothing.
2 The question was "how many different variations of mounting lugs are there on the passenger side of a 318". It does not matter what it is going in, I simply mentioned what it was going in in passing.
3 There are 3 variations on the passenger side of a 318. I have shown pictures of each above so we now know the right side of a 318 can have 3 different mounting boss configurations.
4 That still leaves us with the question "is the differences in model year or is it a car verses truck difference or both".
5 Now I will really throw you a curve. How many of you have seen a 318 with the International Harvester symbol on the side of the block? Yes, Chrysler had IH help cast blocks for them in the 70's. I have owned 2.
