Engine mount bosses

Engine mount bosses - 09/21/12 06:47 PM

I don't do a lot of small blocks and we have a 318 I built years ago that we are using in a 66 A100. The boss on the passenger side is wrong for all the small block mounts I have (5 sets) I have a 61 poly and the bosses are correct, the only other LA's I have are 360's and they are like the 318. Are there year differences in the bosses or pass car/truck differences?

I am welding up a mount but was curious about the cast bosses on the block. I know there are big block differences as to how the lugs are machined and of coarse big block A-bodies the left side is different.

it is my understanding that all 318's are the same, and even the magnum has a set to bolt up the old LA style.

360 mounts are different on one side, but the same on the other, but don't remember which is which.

perhaps you have the sides mixed up?

360 drivers side mount is different than a 318 , pass side is the same .

No, I am not mixed up, but I do very little with small blocks. This is a 318, 1979. The passenger side bosses have 2 holes in the front and 1 upper hole in the rear like in the picture. Both 360s I have are also like this. All of the mounts I have use 2 holes on the rear and 1 upper in front(one set bought here for A100, one set from my Sons V-8 A100, a set from my 73 van, and 2 passenger car sets, all mine were labled when they came off)

I have 2 poly 318s and they have 2 holes in the rear and 1 upper front. 273s and early 318 are like this.

This is the way the mounting lugs are positioned on the 79 318 I am using.

I did a search at work and came up with nothing, searched at home with google and got my anwser. There are several mounting bosses, here are 2 other types. Here is a 4 hole

And here is the older LA motors with 2 bosses in the rear and 1 up front. This is what the mounts I have are made for.

Is it worth pointing out that a 66 318 is a poly?

All the 68-72 A body stuff I've dealt with uses the two bosses at the front and 1 at the rear, either upper or lower depending on block.

340-360 drivers side is more narrow than the 318 mounts. The lugs on the block are not as far apart.

Reread, I never said anything about a 66 318. I said it is going in a 66 A100 PU. The 2 polys I have are a 61 and a 65.

Also there are at least 2 variations of the drivers side 340/360 bosses that I have found.

As usual no one reads what is asked or assumes the op doesn't have a clue and post a bunch of obvious comments, but after I found some pics tonight (don't know why none came up at lunchtime or I would not have asked) I have prof of at least 3 different variations.

If I had not scraped about 8, 273/318s last year I could have looked in my garage but I tossed every thing but 440s and 360s, I did keep 1 383hp boat anchor with 66k

I have a 65 273 and an 87 318. The 273 has the htree hole mounts and the 318 has 4 as you have found out, so yes there are two different setups. The old DC engines book mentioned it and has drawings on how to mod the old mount to fit the new block, but someone said the drawings were wrong, so YMMV there.

I already have the piece cut to weld in, never thought about looking in my old DC books, thanks for reminding me there is good information in them.

I have found 3 different variations so far, strange that all the mounts I have are for the same setup

Since you aren't specific about what you are actually working on, as in what engine in which chassis. Good luck with it.

If it's not a car chassis have fun.

Happy to help and provide worthless input!

Actually, if you knew the answer then you'd know what he was talking about, one of those esoteric (look it up) things. I knew simply because I ran into it putting the 87 318 in place of the 65 273. The chassis doesn't matter other than needing to use, modify or fab the appropriate mounts to fit it. Since we knew the chassis was a 66 A100 and the issue was the later motor mount ear differences (if you knew about them) the answer wasn't tough.

Not true, if it is a LA 318 I almost got into a fight with a customer in a gas station that I worked part time two nights a week and one day on the weekend who had bought a new 1966 Dodge Charger, ended up it had a LA 318 in it, not a 273 like I told him it had OP, the 1966 and later 318 and 273 have a different driver side engine mount lug pattern than all of the 340 and 360 do, the passenger sides are the same on all of those 1966 and later SB blocks I've seen in 47 years of building and racing Mopars

Re: Engine mount bosses - 09/22/12 05:37 AM

Since there is still confussion;
1 I modified a mount for my need, there is no problem, I do not need luck. I put a nailhead in a 54 Ford, built T-buckets from scratch (home made rails), back halfed cars, built front suspensions from junk, and have help build some of the nicer show cars in the midwest (check out 70 Cougar Eleminator at the Ford Museum. Adding a ear to a engine mount is nothing.

2 The question was "how many different variations of mounting lugs are there on the passenger side of a 318". It does not matter what it is going in, I simply mentioned what it was going in in passing.

3 There are 3 variations on the passenger side of a 318. I have shown pictures of each above so we now know the right side of a 318 can have 3 different mounting boss configurations.

4 That still leaves us with the question "is the differences in model year or is it a car verses truck difference or both".

5 Now I will really throw you a curve. How many of you have seen a 318 with the International Harvester symbol on the side of the block? Yes, Chrysler had IH help cast blocks for them in the 70's. I have owned 2.
