Hang an A833 behind a 3rd Gen Hemi? - 09/20/12 05:04 AM
Will this work?
Does it need a block saver (spacer)?
Will a regular bellhousing or SFI one work?
The plan is a 68 Dart 5.7L Hemi 4 speed.

5.7 hemis have the same pattern as a 727, so anything you want to use sb is fine. Not real sure about the flywheel but I think they are produced now.

You can do it. They have the same pattern as a small lock LA/magnum engine. QuickTime makes a blow proof bell that uses a 130 tooth flywheel to install the 833.

The question is why???
You can bolt a modern, useful manual transmission to that engine. Why go backwards?

The jeep before the axle/suspension upgrades.

They may build them but they are still high dollar upgrades that require lots of expertise when working with the EFI. Tim

The jeep started out as a burn salvage.
They got a wrecked 4X4 hemi ram and built the Jeep up from the frame. Painted the body in the back yard. Hung the engine/trans/transfer with bought engine mounts, although they have the ability and tools to fab them. Wired the whole thing using the truck harness adapted to fit, including the cluster and computer. Fuel system, brake pedal, steering mount, throttle, transfer shifter all needed modification.
As pictured before he added the new transfer, axles and suspension, he probably had less than 7K in it. It hauls and crawls. Yes, they know the EFI stuff, some through hard knocks. They also put together a 3rd gen Hemi Honcho for another guy. The son's wife drives a 65 Dart with a full EFI 360 magnum swap connected to a push-button 904. I'm proud to know them both.
The question was to ensure that what they had found before with autos also applied to stick stuff on the 3rd gen hemis. They asked me and I asked here.

The other part of the question is input shaft length.
Since the 5.7L he's got is not a stick application, it is going to use the bearing, not the bushing. With a block saver used as a spacer, will the end of the input shaft be okay, or will it need to be hacked off (or the crank machined deeper)?

Do you by chance know the part number I would need to buy? I'm working on another 64 Sport Fury 4spd and plan to not modify the tunnel and going with a Passon 5spd.
Maybe BPE has a complete kit compiled for this setup.
Regards.

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...e=0&fpart=1I did it. It wasn't a step back for me. I'm only out the cost of a clutch when I decide to swap to something wth more years.
The 5.7/6.1 uses such a small cam in a stock shortblock format that it can push 2.76 gears with a 1:1 top gear with ease. I wouldn't run more than. 3.23 with a short tire on any stock transmission swap.
