Do You Know Mopar Wiring?

Do You Know Mopar Wiring? - 08/22/12 03:15 AM

If you do please help me with this one. I am building a street rod and I am using a 80's column where the turn signals, brakes and taillights were on or partially on individual bulbs. However I am using single taillights on the rod with dual element single bulbs (1157). There is a common way of doing this to get brakes and turn signals to work together on one of the filaments by using a tail light controller from the RV - trailer industry. It lets you hook a single tail light trailer to a multi light truck. I am having trouble getting mine to work right. Here is the question - late 60's RR, GTX, barracuda all had single bulb dual element tail lights for stop turn and tail. In the era of no solid state trailer controllers how did the factory make that work???

The turn signal switch separates the brake/turn signal function. Here's a link to a recent post about it.

Wiring.
A constant hot wire went to the brake switch. (RE in the example)
This signal (Off/On) was directed up through the turn signal switch. (WH in the example)
No turn signal? it went straight through, feeding only the rear lights.
Turn signal? This completed a circuit ON THE TURN SIGNAL SIDE to route the ign on TS power thru the flasher (RE again here) to the front and rear bulbs. The other side was still connected straight through.

Thanks for the replies. You were right on with the diagram/explanation. I didn't remember that the brakes went through the steering column, I was assuming that the white brake wire was for a dash light as my print calls it a "stop lamp". I hooked it up to the tail lights as shown in your print and my system works perfect. I really appreciate the help.
