Use a Fram PH43 or equivalent.

PH43 is the Fram ( ) number for the shorty version of the PH8A.

However, I'm with John; the filter length isn't your problem and I'm not sure a PH43 would be short enough anyway.

I'm thinking, wrong belt, wrong pulley or something wacky with the brackets.

I agree with John. The brackets, pulleys, belt or all of the above are likely incorrect. Are they stock parts or some aftermarket abomination?

edit: I just got treed by DPelletier. Took too long thinking about it.

85068 at CarQuest for the shorty.

I think the Wix label brand numbers are the same on the end of that string. They make those filters for CQ and NAPA.

85515 is the long filter for early power steering or manual steering.

Stay far far away from fram unless you like rebuilding your engine.

When will this internet based fairy tale end? I have over a half million miles and 4-500 bracket racing passes on Frams, never a failure.

at least not everybody here is drinking the kool-aid, . i've used my last wix due to drain back. same with k&n's. going back to baldwins in the old cars. never had an issue with purolators. come to think of it i've never had an isuue with FRAM.

Sorry but the Fram cardboard filters is not an internet fairy tale. It is the fact. Use them at your own risk. Some people have had no problem with them but I won't risk one of my high dollar motors on them. When you're shifting at 6500 rpm you don't want to trust cardboard junk filters. Take a Fram apart and then tell me how well made they are.

Cardboard end plates do not make "cardboard filters". All the end plate does is center the filter element.

Re: 440 oil filter question??? - 08/02/12 11:34 PM

Until they deteriorate and then centering goes down the tubes along with your engine.

Use whichever one gives you the "warm and fuzzies".

Wix/Napa Gold filters (and others, that's just what I like) use better parts and better construction. If you cut them apart next to a Fram there's absolutely no question and no reason not to spend the extra few dollars.

well as far as the brackets go, they are stock, i could have the wrong belt. What length belt should it be?

The filter length isn't the problem.

I have seen a loose/too long power steering belt hit on the water pump pulley but never on the oil filter. . If you look at the picture posted above by DPelliter if the person has the correct parts it's kind hard to imagine the belt hitting the oil filter unless he has some enormous belt or the wrong setup ?

This is a case where not answering the question specifically is a good answer.

Your fan belt is too long , you are out at the end of the adjustment slot.

Nevermind the cheap filter .

cool, thanks for the help guys. I guess thats what i get for going to the local auto parts store.??? Seems stuff from them is always a 50/50 shot whether it is going to work or not. As for the hoses, again O'reilly around the corner.
The number on the top hose is 20630 and the bottom is 20663, thought im not 100% the bottom one is the correct one. It seems a little long, i had to trim some off. Still a little long, but i'll deal with that when i get it close to running, which should be in a couple weeks hopefully.

Re: 440 oil filter question??? - 08/21/12 02:00 AM

ok, i changed the belt, that didnt work. still rubbs the oil filter. not sure what else it could be. Maybe i need a smaller oil filter, wrong pully on the power steering pump, but that is the original one, i beleive. Or brackets on pump are wrong. ?????

you need a 2 groove wp pully so the ps belt goes from crank to wp to ps pump.

my 440 truck non a/c has it that way. 1 belt for ps and 1 belt to alt both on the same 2 groove wp pully.

in this pic it looks like it is touching the oil filter. but it is not.
