2.5 V6 mitsu engines, decent engine? - 07/03/12 12:55 PM

My Dad is picking up a 99 Cirrus tonight as a work car and it has 93k on the clock and has the Mitsu 2.5 V6. I drove the car last night and it runs well and seems reasonably peppy.

Are these durable engines? Are there any known trouble ares or essential maintenance outside of fluids, belts, and filters?

Thanks, I would like to help him keep it running for a while since his last daily was a 2.7 Intrepid that lost a trans before 100k and the water pump at 125k.

Hi. Many moons ago I owned a '86 New Yorker w/a 2.6 Mitsubishi engine. Not that many miles on the engine, I had to replace the oil pump. I remember that job as being horrible and/or miserable but was successful. Other than that, the engine gave me no problems 'till I sold the car.

not easy too work on. oil leakers, distributors go bad and are $$ pricey.haven't seen many blow-up for no reason though.ball joints,(front lower, rear uppers),sway bar links and control arm bushings.are common problems.make sure the air works also. That can be $$.

i have that eng in a 98 sebring, runs great. 27 mpg,146,000 on it. replace the timing belt, check eng and trans mounts. as said, stab links are crap. i put greaseable links in mine. moog i think.

Dealerships are NOTORIOUS for selling $500-600 water pump jobs when it is actually just the o-ring on a crossover tube - a much simpler and CHEAPER repair.
