Edelbrock heads core shift????? - 11/03/08 07:06 PM

Check out these aluminum magnum heads I got last year......
both heads appear to have a bit of core shift on the exhaust port on the right side of the head only.... the exhaust bolt end is actually open
Should I run these or send them back to edelbrock????? TBF

Look how close the port window is to the left side as opposed to the right.....even the port looks a bit deformed as the shape is not right???

Re: Edelbrock heads core shift????? - 11/03/08 07:18 PM

The problem is only on the one exhaust hole on each head....... should I worry about this or run them ??? It seems that the open part of the header bolt hole may disrupt flow a bit but I could put a bolt in and blend it smooth with the port wall as I will be taking the valves out and doing some cleanup work. Is this any kind of an issue at all??? TIA TBF

Core shift on a USA made product? No way possible, that only happens on inferior chinese parts

I'm certainly no expert on cylinder heads, but good grief! So much for "Made in America" quality control. I'd send them back. I'd also call and ask to speak to Vic. When asked why, let em have it with both barrels...

Sure, crucify the guy for this single cylinder head we've seen.

If this is a limited run problem, lets judge the company on how they handle the return.

If this is indeed a larger problem, and they've been shipping a large quantity of these with cor shift problems, then brake out the pitch forks.

Re: Edelbrock heads core shift????? - 11/03/08 07:34 PM

Well, I have a set of big block E-heads and they are very nice. I have used many Edelbrock intakes over the years and they are nice products and never had a problem until now. Does anybody have another set of the aluminum magnum heads that we can compare them with??? TBF

I bought these heads last year and I think they were made a few years ago.... TBF

where is this core shift at ?

Re: Edelbrock heads core shift????? - 11/03/08 07:50 PM

I'd call them & politely explain the issue & ask if I could exch them. I'm not sure exactly how bad the problem is but I would do it for sure for peace of mind. The little bit of coin/time it would take would be nothing compared to you knowing when the eng is done that is it AS GOOD AS YOU WANTED IT TO BE.

As these heads are still brand new I wanted to get the expert opinion before I start grinding a bit on them.... TBF

I looked at the pics again & that looks bad & what about the core shift in areas that you cant see & I was thinking there was a recent thread about a head(s) that was suspect & the guy run it & something(I forgot what) happened right off.

So a customer is supposed to be OK getting crap like that? No way... Edelbrock is supposed to have a quality control department that would never let something out the door like that, no excuses. How could the person/people assembling the head have missed that?

No way that should ever be "OK".

I don't think a customer should have to be O.K. w/ this, but Edelbrock does have a good customer service record. I bet they'd take it back w/out any issues so long as they were never installed

I think Edelbrock would make it right, and there is no need to get ugly with them right from the jump.

It looks more like someone didn't set up the drill jig properly.
What are the other bolt holes like? Are they centered around the ports?
But, I bet Edelbrock will respond positively for you, as long as you aren't foaming at the mouth as soon as they answer the phone.

Re: Edelbrock heads core shift????? - 11/03/08 10:27 PM

I didn't have any luck with customer service at Edelbrock. All I wanted to now or to tell them was what I had found in my heads.
The answer was that "they are race parts and that you are expected to rebuild them before running them, so what did I expect".
I bought a set of S/B closed chambers and had to to a complete valve job because the valves were out as much as .008 in some seats.
then setting up the rocker geometry is another story.( you can't run any factory rockers correctly)
For a bolt on head, it certainly is not.
A pair of heads at $1600.00 ended up costing $3000.00 in the end to get them installed and running, and I did the assembly work.
Custom shaved lash caps, aluminum rockers, smith bros push rods,TTI headers, (69 340 manifolds don't fit.)
I just wanted a new set of heads for my 360,it's not all the goodies I had to install to get them to work it was that they are advertised as a stock bolt on.
I would not just bolt them on with out doing a thorough check.
I don't claim to know a lot but that's what I do know.

Ouch! That definitely doesn't sound good. Especially when they advertise them as bolt-on out of the box!

Bolt-on....there's a phrase I love.

The same mo-fo that thought up that one, also came up with "plug'n'play".

Once you modify everything around it, yup, that sucker bolts/plugs right in there

Re: Edelbrock heads core shift????? - 11/03/08 11:07 PM

I have had not issues with rockers fitting or working with 4 sets of LA and big block RPMs used. the valve job issues are commen, and on everyone's heads. They can be bolted on and run, but they frankly aren't that good that way...lol

For that type of defect, I'd send them back. Why wait 2 years to do it tho? Or did you just get them TB?

That's why "bolt on" is always in quotes. The quotes MEAN SOMETHING.

Re: Edelbrock heads core shift????? - 11/04/08 12:20 AM

I just want to recite that old adage I hear sometimes:

"Judge a man's character not by the mistakes he makes, but how well he acknowledges and fixes those mistakes."

Take 'em back. Unless you seal those bolts, you'll have an exhaust leak, be it minimal or whatever.

Call back and talk to Vic, he'll handle it guaranteed

It's not core shift. I've never spoken to Vic himself but I recently sent them a SB supervictor intake that was improperly machined and they were very easy to deal with and correct the situation.

I bought these heads for my 97 Grand Cherokee 390 project that I will get going sometime next year... I have not really looked at them closely as they are still in the original packaging but I had to get something out of the storage area and I decided to check them out...... Overall they look pretty nice but the blot hole breakthrough looks like a no go to me..... I will call Edelbrock and send them a few pix or a link to this thread. I'm sure they will take of me being the long time customer that I am right? TBF
