Leaky Valve Cover Gaskets

Leaky Valve Cover Gaskets - 06/14/12 05:23 PM

M/T valve cover Eddy heads.

They have always been leak prone.

The cork ones seems better than the rubbery Fel Pro ones.

Have always had to cinch them down more then I'd like to get them to stop leaking.

All I have are the rubbery ones after a valve lash. The drags are this weekend, no other cork ones to be had.

Anyone have a method for no leak valve covers?

Make shure the valve covers aren't bottoming out on the intake, my mopar performance valve covers did that all I had to do is grind a bit off the bottom of the valve cover

Looking at a set of stock covers and my M/T's. The stock ones are flat.

The M/T's have a ridge in the middle of the lip the gasket rests on.

I'm going to use a new set of gaskets with less torque and some silicone.

I always put a layer of Ultra Black RTV on both the valve cover and the cylinder head - never had problems w/ leaks

I've had a pair of 'hi-temp' cork gaskets underneath 'Mopar Perf' cast covers for a lot of years...

No sealer...

No problem...

I can't begin to count how many different brands of gaskets I've used with stock covers, M/T covers and 440Source style sheet covers.
i've gone back to the Mopar 4027092 orange "silicone" type gaskets and I use Mopar grey RTV engine sealer to stick the gaskets to the covers. Let it sit on a bench with some pressure on gasket for about 4 hours then install.Don't use RTV between the gasket and the head.
Had the covers off a half dozen times and no problems.

Why no RTV between gasket and head? I've done that since 1997 with 0 leaks...

Could be....I just don't find it much fun having to clean off all that snot off the head and gasket everytime I set the valves or just pull the covers to take a look-see.
Permanent seal maybe....but NOT for periodic removal. If your covers are half decently true on the surface, you shouldn't need sealer anyways. The factory didn't.

I used RTV to glue the gasket to my stock cover then put a small amount of grease on the other side of the gasket. Stock covers and aluminum heads, no leaks and the covers come off easy. I used a red bearing grease.

I do not understand the use of RTV on the valve cover gaskets.

Never used it, never had leak issues. Use a good gaket, not cheap o cork junk.
