Autozone radiator in 73 Dodge truck

Autozone radiator in 73 Dodge truck - 06/01/12 12:38 PM

Just bought a new parts store radiator for my 73 work truck (400).

Installed and found the inlet on the opposite (left) side. The new Rad has an emissions fitting on the right boss where the '73 would normally have its hose.

I figure they probably made a design change at some point in the 70s when they started adding emissions to trucks. Thus if I ordered a hose for a '78 big block, it should fit both the thermostat side (since that never changed) and the radiator side.

Make sense?

I'm thinking (but not absolutely sure) that A/C vs non A/C have hose on opposite sides. Maybe someone else will confirm or refute this.

All the books I have show A/C BB on the drivers side, non A/C BB on passengers side. Your top hose should go to the other side, not cross over the A/C V-belts.

Actually you got a radiator for a smallblock. 73 and later big blocks A/C or not had BOTH outlets on the passenger side. You could get a flex hose and use the new rad or get the correct one.

Do you have the part number for the rad you have in there?

Thanks for the replies.... Autozone lists the same part number for small and big-block. (B889) this is probably a one-size fits all deal, with the great majority being small blocks.

However, on the cooling side of things, the radiator has the same number of rows and is the same physical size as the one I removed, so it should be OK there.

I guess I'm just asking now if anyone is aware of any big-block Mopar with an upper hose on the drivers side? I think just about anything would work, car or truck.

When I built one of my big block trucks I used a flex hose to run behind the compressor to clear everything. Thats pretty much your only option in this case. My '72 Monaco is going to get one as well but there is no compressor to clear.
