trow out bearing - 05/20/12 09:17 AM

ok we are on to the 2nd TO Bering....

Who makes a great Bearing ... even something heavy duty

We have a 69 trans with the 18splin so that uses the bigger TO bearing.

we are running the Borg cover and a DF plate it all McLeod

Now we can buy a new bearing with sleeve or just the bearing.. I dont care ether way I just want one that wont go out in less than 5k miles

So any input helps

Throw out bearings are not designed for constant spinning as they will heat up, their grease will melt out and the will become noisey and fail.

The only time a throw out bearing wears is when it is spinning. If you are wearing one out in only 5000 miles, you are either riding the clutch, resting your foot on the clutch pedal when you drive or your linkage is out of adjustment causing it not to fully release and continue to spin when the clutch should be fully released.

When adjusting free play..
Pull off the inspection plate down below and double-check that the bearing is being pulled back from the pressure plate...

Judging free play up top with worn 40 year old linkage has problems..

Just my $0.02...

Ya I know how and why they go out .. i dont ride the clutch or rest my foot...and i have it adjusted to where its not riding the clutch cover..

But she drives the car and has some bad habits that are not clutch friendly ... But you just cant tell some people things.

So I was just looking for something that was just a better that stock..

Sorry to sound like a butt head just tired of problem

Not being a smart a-- but someone driving a stick that either dosent know how to drive one or has bad habits you will always have problems.Only way to fix it is to teach them the correct way to drive, continually replace parts or not let them drive.I use Timken bearings and have never had any problems.Rocky

Re: trow out bearing - 05/23/12 07:09 AM

Are all 18spline trans take the same TO bearing ?

I see the listing one listed for 440 with a 18 spline

and different one listed for Hemi with 18 spline

I know the Hemi trans have a bigger out put shaft..

so is there a way to tell which one i have with out pulling the trans ?

I think we have a Hemi 18 spline .. I didnt go to buy the first TO but i remember she came home with one that was for a 440 and it didnt fit ..

Again I know very little about 4 speeds ..

Thanks
Again All

Im 99% sure that Ma used onlt 2 bearings. One was for the 18 spline as they are Hemi boxes. The other is for the 23 spline.Last one I got from AZ had my buddy the parts guy order a Timken for me.It was like 40 bucks. It came in a nice dusty old box and has been in for 8 years.Rocky
