Torsion Bar Mystery - 05/15/12 05:55 AM

I found set of 41" long torsion bars (b-body)in my garage that I acquired some time ago and forgot that I had. They both have one yellow paint dot at one end and on that end are the numbers 462R a horizontal line and 412 below it. The other end of these .991 bars has 462R with KK below the line. Both bars have white Made in Canada sticker wrapped around them near the end opposite the paint marking. Do I have two right side bars maybe? Are these aftermarket bars? I looked down the bars and the twist appears to be right hand, from the paint marking end. Please help, this is my first post here after only reading for decades. I am out of prison now,(DNA acquittal), and finally building my 67 GTX. OOPS, I make booboo. I neglected to zero dial calipers and got .991 when the bars are really 1.222 Dia. I laid them on a table and they are identical as far as I can tell. With one end flat on one of the six sides the "groove" or "line" between 462R and 412 is at 2 o'clock; on the other end the "groove" or "line" is at 6 o'clock (going by where the 462R has rotated to)and that end sits on one the six points. Not sure if this indicates any pre load twist-I read that bigger bars don't need any "twist" because of the larger diameter. Now from all I read these bars are probably too stiff for the street, luckily I also have a set of MP .960, new in the box, so I'll probably use these so my 67 GTX will ride better. I'm putting a stroked 400 with aluminum heads in it so maybe it won't be too heavy for the .960 bars. I want it to handle well on the street. Thanks for all the advice and help!

I can't help you with the torsion bars, but I just wanted to say Welcome and I hope you enjoy your build.

The bigger bars were not RH or LH. There isn't a .990 bar so I'm not sure exactly what you have. MP bars had a .960 bar and a 1.00 inch bar. You might have the MP 1.0 inch bars but they usually measure oversize due to the paint, not undersize.

if those are used bars they will have a slight twist in them--lay them on the floor to see it there is a twist---if there is, if you use them make sure they are still twisting in the same direction----if they are new (virgin) bars i dont think there is a problem with which side they are on---- but i would call a company that sells bars and ask them how to tell left from right like you bought the bars from them----bob
