2005 Dodge Ram idle problems - 05/11/12 02:38 PM

I have a 2005 Dodge Quad cab pickup truck with a 4.7 engine. The problem is at idle. When cold or hot the idle will vary from 600 rpm to 900 rpm. When cold it will sometimes go as high as 1100 rpm. When in gear I can feel it surging up and down. What causes this? Also it seems to be using a lot of gas lately. As always,Thanks for any replies.

I would start by cleaning out the throttle body and check the plugs too

I would also take a look at the tps.

My ram idled weird and it was due to a weak battery.

Remove the throttle body and remove the IAC motor and clean all the ports. If you haven't yet, replace the spark plugs. Those 4.7L eat spark plugs. They NEED changed every 30k. The electrodes wear off fast. When you remove the coils make sure you clean them and apply some dielectric grease around the outside where it contacts the head and small dab inside for the spark plug.
