How do you Identify an A999

Pulled the trans outta my Ramcharger and I'm trying to figure out what trans it is. Its a 2wd 85 Ramcharger with a 318. The trans itself says 904. But Ive been told that only 727s and A999s came in 2wd ramchargers. HELP!!!!

can you crawl under to look at the pan??? the 999 will have one simillar to the 904 where the 727 has a kickout on the pass side front of the pan. my money's on a 727, because i was under the impression that auto equipped D series based trucks (ramchargers/traildusters included) got a 727 due the the GVW/load hauling ability, even the slant 6's.

Somewhere along the line the trans issue got a little murky, early 80s I think.
My 85 D100 318 has a 904, and I am pretty sure it came there, based on how everything looks there.
Pre 80 I would agree on most everything having a 727, not sure about the \6, only 727 one I have ever seen was in a factory taxi car.
Pan shape will definitely tell you, lock- ups came later, looked same tho.
I did have a 92 Dakota 318 that from the factory had a 518 (overdrive 727), thought that odd, reg cab/short no trailer tow or other HD equipment.

The part number stamped on the case pan rail can be matched up with the parts catalog of the appropriate year and it will tell you exactly how the transmission was assembled/built as by chrysler.

In the 80's chrysler started using the 904 based transmissions alot more in the truck/van line because of fuel economy becoming a more pressing issue. Probably cheaper per transmission as well to mfg.

The pan itself looks nothing like the 727 in my New Yorker. So I know its either a 999 or a 904. I just cant tell if its one or the other. The bellhousing says 904 but someone told me it could be a 999 using a 904 case.

A999 - came behind a 360
A998 - came behind a 318

Either translate the part number on the pan rail or take it apart and count clutches.
