Do you mean how thick is the top ring land? All the newer motors from OEs are getting pretty thin up there
they are doing it for the reasons you mentioned. They are also mostly useing hypereutechtic pistons to reduce piston expansion so they can run tighter clearance above the top ring and therby reduce cold start emmisions. Some makers are putting piston number stamps on the bottom of the piston instead of the top to further reduce crevace volume so I would say it is pretty important.
