Stealth Heads --- Rocker Arms - 03/07/12 05:28 PM

This is for all of you that have installed the 440 source Stealth heads sucessfully. I would like to know what adjustable rockers arms you been able to make work with the casting. I currently run Crane Gold 1.5 adjustables, but the intake pushrod is touching the intake runner. It's like they drilled the hole through the head at the wrong angle.

Please tell me I do not have to take this thing apart to clearance them!!?

My understanding is that most all the Stealth heads need clearance thru the pushrod hole.

Mine needed clearanced. I used the 440 source roller rockers and shafts.

They said they may need clearancing with 3/8 rods when I bought mine. They said to just get it so it doesn't touch. No extra clearance necessary.

I'm using 5/16 rods with stock rockers and I don't seem to have a clearance issue.

At this point I am going to go ahead and order Smith Bros. hardened tempered 5/16 ball and cup pushrods. My open spring pressure is only 350lbs., so its worth it to me to not have to tear the thing down and have the heads clearanced.

I called 440source and they said I should have clearanced them when it was put together. I understand that completely, I am just confused as to why they would build them knowing 3/8 rods don't clear.

I did exactly the same thing except mine are ball/ball. But I agree, they shouldn't need to be clearanced. They should just do it while they are machining them.

With the stock rocker arms it's a little more difficult to tell if there will be an issue because the arms are free to move side to side 1/4" or so. I bolted (mocked) everything together and turned it over a few times to see if they would find a happy place, but they just stayed wherever I placed them, but it seemed to want to stay away from the head if I started it there. I may just clearance them a little just in case.

What is the preferred method to clearance them?

I have bad news for you, the 5/16 pushrods may not clear either. At least mine didn't. I learned the lesson the hard way. Cheap and good don't go together. The link bar between two of my 440Source roller lifters broke and wiped out my cam. When I took the valve train apart I found the bearings in most of my 440Source rocker arms were rough and the 440Source rocker shafts were galled. Plus the "hardened tips" on the 440Source valves were showing signs of wear. All of this at less than a few hundred street miles. Do yourself a favor, if you have any other 440Source stuff, replace it now while you still have a chance to sell it to some sucker. The only thing I'm still using is the head castings.

Die grinder with a carbide cutter. Dremel may work ok also.

Here's another thread on the subject

Thanks for the link.

I believe there are some variables based on your rocker arm set-up, but it is pretty much a given I will have to clearance at this point.

I set up the valvetrain on mine this weekend and there is plenty of clearance with the 5/16 rods...

Ball to ball 5/16's pushrods here, plenty of clearance for me.

They are designed for stock valvetrain. Most aftermarket aluminum rockers just don't seem to be working.
