Advance cam or not?

I have a Lunati voodoo 60302 in a stock compression 400, it's in a heavy 73 New Yorker with 2.76 gears.

The motor has been in the car a couple of years now and runs pretty good for what it is but as you can imagine I could use more bottom end.

When I degree'd it initially I was coming up with 109. I probably should have have fixed it then but left it at that. It has a cloyes 3 key chain and I was going to advance it 4 degrees, but some say too much advance is not good for a split pattern cam in a low comp motor?

Advancing 4 degrees should put it at about 105. The cam has a 112LSA, compression is about 7.9. Will it make a noticeable difference or is it not recommended?

I can offer this; I have a 60303 in a Cuda, 3.55 4 speed. I degreed it and installed at 106.5. Powerband came on at 2000. Had to drop the pan so decided to experiment. Advanced it 2 degrees (did not "re-degree" it with a wheel though). SLIGHT reduction in the usable powerband, begins at 1900 now.

In your case I would advance 4 degrees, and expect a noticeable improvement.

After advancing a cam 4 degrees do you still set the timing at say 34 or 36 total? I have a 340.

Cam timing and ignition timing are seperate and you use the same as before. If you leave the dizzy in when you change the timing it has to be adjusted after as it will advance or retard same amount you change the cam.

I use it for a reference last time i did an in car cam advance with my gear drive I had the timing at 38 total! I wanted and set gears to give me 4 more degrees cam advance and after my timing was at 42 perfect I new the cam move was what I wanted in the right direction turned the timing back to 38 and off to the races! Ran 3 to 4 tenths faster made me smile! :-)

you'd keep the total the same but alter the initial/curve(slots)/springs as the cam will change cyl psi & therefore the pinging point(s)

If you installed it at 109 it's already 3* advanced from the 112 LSA. Now ,you want to advance it another 4 degerees to 7 total. Need to be careful you don't get the exh lobe way out there, it's going to be 119.

Good question but if it's 7.9 compression , those piston are about .110 in the hole .
