518 size vs 618 (47re) - 01/11/12 07:29 PM
Are these transmissions physcially the same size? I have a 47re laying around that I want to put in my challenger and I know the 518s fit.
Thanks
Thanks

yes they are the same EXCEPT the bellhousing is sized for a 13" or so converter. Because of that I am not sure if it's a little longer in the manicase.
What are you going to do about the electronics ?

Bellhousing is going to be an ultra bell. I am thinking full maual vb. I heard by using this I can get rid of most of the electronics and put the od/lockup on a switch. This will be going in a high hp street car.

A 47re does not have a govenor diesel or gas. Just put the bell on it and swap VBs.

Swapping valve bodies won't do much good if there's no mechanical governor. The RE isn't a good choice for a retrofit.

the diesel units are full of turbo400 internals and there is all kind of aftermarket stuff available---check with larry at chrisman torque converters he has pioneered a torqueflite converter with the same stuff inside----years ago he bought a $900 race converter from a big national chain then cut it open to find it full of machined down nissan stuff--that propelled him into using off the shelf american parts----check his website out----other guys here have mentioned using his stuff--and i think his are moderately priced too----bob

an trans ending with RE has no mechanical governor.
I'm not a racer so I can't answer if installing a full manual valve body on an RE series trans will work or not

Question on the full manual VB
The only 518 full manual VB that I found is a Grinner with trans brake. This is a overdrive but non lock up 89-93
Is there a full manual VB with out trans brake?
For 518 over drive non lock up?

Diesel Transsmission Technology in British Columbia built the Manual VB i spoke of above , I can't remember if it had a transbrake in it or not. It might have because the Cummins needs to build boost at the line and that would sure make things easier.

Easier on everything except the reverse band and the forward clutch! I don't know if I want to sit on top of a trans being fed 1300FT/LBS of torque from a Cummins seeing 60+ LBS/Boost, being held in both low and reverse. I'm not saying they don't make a Trans/Brake for diesel 618's - I'm just looking at the "mechanicals" of using one. Sorta like "Yeah, I CAN load 600 grains of black powder into my muzzle loader, but should I?

Now that is funny!
Who and why put chevy parts in a better trans?
This trans can easily be built so no NA gas motor will hurt it.
If the trans can be built and hold a diesel with 1500 Ft. lbs. it is over kill for a gas motor.
The T-400 is a good trans too.

The CONVERTERS are built with T400 parts, not the TRANSMISSIONS.
