I picked up a 741 open chunk with a new 3.23 and wondering if the ring and pinion is the same as on the cone style sure-grip?

The SG will work in the 741 housing but if the R&P came from a 742 or 489 they wont fit the 741 housing.Rocky

I have three 741 cases and two are 741 cone style Sure-grips. The two Sure-grips are 3.55 and 3.91. I just want to swap the ring & pinion from the 741 that has the open diff into one of the 741 cases with the Sure-grip. Just wanted to make sure the r&p is the same between the open and the SG.

Be easier to just switch the sure grip unit to the 741 3.23 set up. All you would need to do is put the ring gear on the sure grip case and reset the back lash. Leave the pinion alone.

I would sell one or both of those POS cone type chucks and buy a clutch type sure grip to swap in .
edit ... oh wait that doesn't answer your original question.
Do as the guy above me says , just swap a cone type into the 3.23 and have the open put into the one you take it from ...

All the 8-3/4 rears have interchangeable SG units (clutch or cone). The gears won't interchange. The 741 is a small diameter straight pinion, 742 is large straight pinion and the 489 is a large tapered pinion that uses a crush collar for preload.

Thanks for all the info folks!! I will just install the 3.23 ring gear on the sure-grip and put it in the open case.
