'69 bucket seat headrest question - 12/16/11 06:51 PM

Were headrests std. on '69 bucket seat cars?

I am doing my seats and found that the backs were dated right around the time the car would have been delivered... about a month after the time the car would have been built. Trying to figure it out. Maybe the car showed up without head rests, the customer complained and the dealer installed a pair of backs with headrests?? Anyway, the bases were dated correctly for the car and the tags matched left and right and the seat backs each had the same date on their respective tags albeit, with the later date....

Just looking for peace of mind..

Thanks

Headrests were not standard on 69 Model Year cars until 1/1/69. They were optioanl on cars built Aug-Dec 1968.

Without proof of the real reason why , that sounds like as good of an explanation as any.

Just curious, why would there be a month between when the car was built and when it was delivered??

Or do you mean ordered, then delivered?

Otherwise your theory could be right. I'd guess that it was something discovered at the plant, old stock shipped or mixed/dated inventory and then taken care of in the "repair" area at the end of the line after final inspection. A lot of that stuff goes on in an assembly plant. I have a 63 383 that is stamped coded as a "36", which is means it should be a 361!! Externally, they look the same. When stock gets low, stuff happens to keep the line running.

my 69 roadrunner was an early build car and has a decent amount of 68 parts on it.. it did however have headrests.. i have the luxury of having a build sheet, and it has "headrests" rubber stamped on it, so i am not sure if that was an option, or that they were added as standard when my car was built. I can't speak to if they are standard, but they do exist on my runner.

Re: '69 bucket seat headrest question - 12/16/11 11:43 PM

I know my car was built during the last week of April. The tag on the seat backs are (I believe) the third week of May. Did not mean to cause confusion in my description, just possibly determine a potential cause. This would have been a fairly late build and probably would not have ended up with '68 parts but that certainly cannot be ruled out. If the car was finished last week of April, it would have more than likely delivered within, what.... a couple weeks? (I waited almost three for my '10 Challenger after it was confirmed as having been built). I was just assuming that by the time the problem was found out and the actions taken to replace the seat backs, it would have put the time frame pretty close to the dates of my seat back frames. I also am assuming that the dealer would have ordered complete, stuffed assemblies or that they may have been removed from another car at the dealer? It is also possible they simply ordered the new frames and transfered all the guts and tracks to them.... I guess I will never know. Thought I'd put it out there though. Thanks for the replies.

The seats were replaced at some time in the cars life. Pretty simple answer.

69 Head Rest topic covered in link. Chrysler TSBs included:

My 69 Road Runner was built in September 68 so no head rests and no provision in the seat back either.

Is the car in question a 426 SPD A12 car? If so, what's the 6-digit number in the middle of the fender tag's top line?

All the 68-69 upper seat frames are stamped for headrests. The most likely scenario is the headrests in your car were cracked, warped or disgusting looking and the last owner removed them ...seats recovered.
Were any of the headrest nylon stops or guides still installed in the seat frames?

That's not consistent with the Chrysler Technical Service Bulletin in the links I provided above so I'll post them again in jpg form.

1969 model year cars with production dates prior to December 1st 1968 had NO head rests and NO provision in the seat back frame to facilitate field installation.

1969 model year cars with production dates on or after December 1st 1968 had no head rests but did HAVE provision in the seat back frame to facilitate field installation.

Hi Anthony. All the upper seat frames were stamped...even the ones built in 1967 for the 68 model year. What the TSB is talking about is all the internal stops and guides etc.Looks like even if your late 68 built car was not equipped with the optional headrests it had all the hardware installed....except for the outside bezels and of course the headrests.Same deal with the 3rd tail light bulb in 69 Coronets.About a month prior to the new bumped tail light lense and 3 bulb housings the new tail lamp harness appeared.

That makes more sense now. So since my car was built in September 1968, I'm only lacking the internal components to to install the headrests which I can install when I reupholster the seats. The seat backs will still accept the mentioned hardware even though not originally equipped. That's good to know because I would ultimately like headrests.

There is no other scenario , some one removed them and it wasn't the factory or the dealer, headrests were a FEDERAL MANDATE .

Dan it's a 383 car.
