Since I just went through my heads, I`m thinking about re-honing the block and throwing in new rings, bearings and gaskets on my 400/470 stroker and was wondering what the average cost is since I havn`t worked in a machine shop for a while. Thankxxx............ EDIT; I mean, bearings, rings gaskets etc. plus the hone job and I`ll put it together.

I just recently had a block done, not a refresh though but taking out what you don't need to buy or have done, like balancing, pistons, block fill and so forth I'd say probably in the neighborhood of $400-$600.

if you are not going to change the rods, a leak down test will tell you if all that is needed. maybe a peak at the bearings.

I don`t plan on changing anything but the rings, bearings and gaskets although my oil pressure is great. My reason is that for a while I raced w/out an air filter an my cyl. walls had some scratches and w/out a pcv valve, It`s got a bit of blow-by. My cranking comp. #`s were bet 165-170..........

Id say $300-$500 Dom...
Figure main and rods bearings will cost you $175-$200 alone..
Good set of conventional file fit rings... Another $150 or so. Then you may find that the crank might need to be polished out... Good time to have it magna fluxed and check for hair line cracks...
So maybe another $50 there.
Then if the timing chain is loose.. another $75. The you need all gaskets.. This can cost as little as $60-$80 or if you run the better head gaskets additional $125-$150..
Oil pump should be checked....
Lifters..
springs..
rocker arms..
Need close inspection...
You run a roller so the bronze gear needs looked at...
I have freshen'd a few race motors for just the cost of bearings and gaskets if all looks good...
Good luck...

I know I need head and intake gaskets and a timing chain for sure. I run the blue rubber oil pan gaskets and my only other concern was the 11 year old rod bolts as I`m not sure which ones they are that came w/the Chevy/eagle rods. If I change em I ASSume they`ll have to be honed.

i just went to a new machine shop that just opened up a couple months ago for the same thing . i figured since they were new and local id give them a try. they quoted me 1200.00 and i was blown away. i had to ask twice to make sure he knew i was putting it together. it has been a while since i have had anything done so i didnt know if shops are charging that much or ?

That is a good shopping list. But I didn't see the cost of a hone with torque plate and that could be $150-$250.
The crank magnaflux is worth doing, and you could do the rods too if you have any concerns.

Jason Pettis quoted me $200.00 for a hone w/a torque plate plus I`ll need cam bearings installed since I don`t have the tool.

Fitting the cam bearings can be a PITA. Only change them if they show serious signs of wear. If they look decent and the cam feels firm in its jouirnals, dont mess with them.

Well Jason freshened my junk up the end of last year. Cant go wrong with his work for sure. As for cost, well lets just say it was a tad bit more than $400
