I am putting an old street killer back together and as with many a good number of parts were missing whenI got it. Fortunately the fender tag was in tack. It is a 69 GTS with a 927 SBD, bucket console 4 speed car with gold interior. My question is would it have had head rest or not, at that point they weren't mandatory. Are there any predictors clues that may tell me with reasonable certainty. Let me know if any other details are needed to make an assumption.

Thanks in advance, Kevin

I'm not real sure, but I think in 69 all cars came with headrest and was an option up until then. If I'm wrong someone else will chime in.

My understanding is that they became mandatory 01/01/69 before that they were optional. OR was that shoulder belts. Maybe both. you're right though someone will have a bulletin or law or something with the facts, but what about mine????

I believe that Mopars built early in the 69 model year didn't all have head rests in them. My early 69 Road Runner with buck seat interior does not have head rests. In fact, my car looks identical to this concourse correct 69 Hemi Road Runner in this YouTube video.

Wow, Great info! So do I understand the TSB correctly? My early 69 non-headrest bucket's have the provision for headrests with the right exterior components?

Only if it was built on or after December 1, 1968.

Your '68-'69 bucket seat frames will have provisions to add headrests, you will need a kit for all the hardware. This is from BE&A.

Thanks Barry, great info. I was aware of much of the content or at least had an idea of it due to previous threads on Moparts. My question still remains though, is there anyway to know how mine came?

Do you have a broadcast sheet for it? If yes, check the headrest box on line 6.

Also....

Are the seats original to the car? If so, if the bezels were installed periously the screw holes in the seat frame will show some marks. If no marks, no bezels & no headrest(s).

No and no, former street racer and gutted at some point al though I may have a line on some of the original interior components, console and seats, but nothing solid. Were they common on early 69 cars or typically considered rare?

I would consider them "RARE" on a 9/68 GTS Dart. It was a ~$40 OPTION.

If it is a well optioned Dart & you like them - add them, if it's a "stripper" leave them off/out.

In '68 ~7.5% (> 1/14) of Chargers & ~20.7% Charger R/Ts (> 1/5) were equipped with headrests.
