You simply slip the spring off the peg and tweak it either tighter or looser depending on your needs, then reattach. Crude, but very effective. Really no different than calibrating a spring-activated thermostat/thermometer/meter. Now if the inards are worn out, they are worn out.

Seems logical. But without being able to see the mechanism I don't know how you would be able to tell how much effect each 'adjustment' had made. These are cheap enough aftermarket that if it is suspect, just replace it. Unless you are dealing with an NOS/100 point restoration I just would not bother.
