My '68 Barracuda originally came with a 383 with a 4 speed but was swapped out to a 318 and auto tranny. I'm restoring back to original and have to replace to 4 speed tunnel because the original tunnel was all hacked up. I was wondering if anyone knows how to get the exact location of the tunnel so everything will be in the right place when the tranny goes in. Thanks again in advance.

Maybe I should mention my car will have a console and the tunnel is from AMD. Thanks

The tunnel is form fitted to the floor , it's obvious where it fits because it will only fit tight against all contours in one spot .

That's how it worked for me... placed the "hump" where it fitted best and the shifter came out right in the middle of the hole (70E).

The hump will fit.... in a perfect world!
In case you are interested in saving yourself some headaches.... Try installing the 4 speed first. Set the hump on the bare floor. Trace an outline on the floorpan using a sharpie pen, then remove the hump. Cut 2 to 2 1/2" INSIDE of the line, then install the shifter. Now set the hump in place so the shifter is in the exact center of the oval hole in the hump. NOW see how close you are compared to the original ink outline. No two cars had the exact same position, as far as I have seen. This method may help you from cutting too much metal out of the floor. Good luck.

My car is stripped down and on a rotisserie right now. Can't install the 4 speed. Here's a pic.

Exactly how many A bodies have you converted from Auto trans to 4 speed, hhmmm? Do you really think the factory installed the trans in every single car that rolled down the line BEFORE cutting the hole, or for that matter same for thing with the hump?

Also if you spent time reading and AND understanding his question instead of looking for spelling and grammar mistakes/typos you would have seen that his car is already a 4 speed.

Looking at this picture you may also need a donor auto tunnel that extends into the drivers foot well area as that hole looks awfully BIG , but you won't really be able to tell till you get the floor hump and drop it in place, there are contours on the floor that the tunnel is formed to fit into.

Take a break from being an ass. Whats your story? Are you some sort of Liberal defense attorney with the irresistable drive to come to the defense of the downtrodden?
I READ the post. I understood it. The car WAS a 4 speed converted to an AUTOmatic. I was trying to help here. I used to respect you and your knowledge but it is easily apparant that you have the sense of humor of a banana. You life must be pretty boring. I have NO time for flatliners like you that take no joy in life. Me? I like to have fun WHILE providing help to those that that I can. You dont like what you read from me? Click on IGNORE THIS USER. As stated, I used to respect your intellect but with your total lack of humor, I may consider using this feature against you.
I may have had a small segment to test from, but 4 years ago I was converting an automatic car to a 4 speed. I checked 4 cars and found that all 4 were within 3/4 of an inch of each other. That may be close for some, but I was trying to pass that info along.
Sorry if the arguement distracted you. I have a rep of being obnoxious sometimes, but I am certain that my experiences have helped people here and there.

I did a 1970 duster. It looks to me like your existing hole is cut too far into the driver's floorboard all the way from front to back but the hump will tell the story. Others on here are right. Those humps were form fitting. I myself would mock up the trans using the trans mount as a guide just to make sure it's dead nuts on. Not easy on a rotissary, but doable. I installed mine with the 4 speed in and my hump was butchered and I had to add some steel in places. I found that the area where the hump hits the firewall was especially helpful for lining it up.

If you do wait to weld it in, DON'T put the dash frame in first. Getting under that thing to grind metal and get your welds in is a bear. I welded the hump all the way around with a solid bead. At this point, I think I would just RTV the thing in and call it good.

I’m listening.
