While it may be possible is it easy or relatively painless? Found a cheap small 70's AMC Hornet with a 6 and thought a 340 might be a nice swap.
Any experience on this? Links?
(haven't found a reasonably priced a body in 10 years that is not across the country. )

IIRC some of those came with v8's from the factory. It shoukd fit easily but I could'nt tell you about the fab work or the ease of doing it.
Sounds like a worthy and cool project.Go for it.

I have been keeping my eyes open for a clean javelin for years to stuff a 440 in.

It would be a neat swap. There are also some good speed parts available for the AMC V8's 304-401 cu in. Edelbrock makes a head now for example. A swap with a built AMC V8 could be fun also and maybe less fab work.

Not wanting to seek out any AMC V8 or parts because I was interested in dealing with the parts I have on hand. I have a built 340 so I wondered if someone had any Mopar to AMC experience. I know any AMV V8 to V8 swap is simple because they are all the same. Not wanting to look for any AMC stuff especially since the 401 is quite expensive and difficult to find.
Not sure on the 6 to V8 swap.

I think if you can get an oilpan to work that everything else will come together.

You'll have to fab motor mounts, but the trans mount should be a bolt in since they used 727's. As mentioned above the oil pan will be the most critical part. I have a 68 AMX so if you need any measurements PM me. Try asking over on http://theamcforum.com/forum/

Although I'll warn you that they are more anal about non amc engine swaps then non mopar engine swaps on here.

I was reading a swap post on some AMC Jeep forum of some guy who wanted to swap a 350 chevy into the Jeep and they did give him a hard time so I know what they will object to.
Honestly i like to keep the engine swaps within each make Ford=Ford, Chevy = Chevy and so on.
But with already having one component or another it is wasteful to not to explore the opportunities.

I posted in the amc forum for you. I seem to remember seeing a 70's Hornet 2dr on there that had a small block mope in it.

Sell the 340 and build an amc 360 or 390 instead?

Are the V8 engines (blocks, heads, cranks etc) found in 70's and 80's jeeps the same as the ones used in older amc musclecars? If so finding one to rebuild wouldn't be that difficult.

I put a 360 mopar ina gremlin, which is the same underhood as a hornet...your biggest obstacles will be oil pan, amc is rear sump mopar is front so you will need a truck pan, you will have to clearance said pan to clear the steering drag link. motor mounts mopar is alot further forward than amc. headers...the left side is tricky there will be fabrication there..right side bolts in with some clearanceing of the strut rod mount. Amc goes rearward as mopar goes forward. and the big one is the distributor..mopar is in the back amc is in the front...not a big deal you would think except you cant have the wiper motor anymore and need to clearance the cowl...the car I was building was going to be race only so that didnt matter.

if you deceide to go amc v8 power, the engine crossmember is different, you will need the small body motor plates, amx jav or rebel wont work. 360s are very plentiful, 304 arent real hard to find, 390 and 401 get pricey quick. also the early amcs pre 72ish used a borg warner trans so the crank pilot is smaller and a torquflite wont work. however you can bolt an amc mount to a 904 and retain your stock driveshaft and shifter linkage...

im currently converting my gremlin x to amc v8 power it was orig a 6 cyl, you will also prob want to do something with the model 15 rear behind a v8 with power it will be shortlived, and dont forget about the huge 9 in drums that the 6 popper had...luckily discs are pretty easy to find off a spirit or concord...and if you want an amc rear the model 20 isnt too hard to find.

Great info!
Thanks
Just to clairfy for me. If the hornet is originally a 6 what has to be done to convert to AMC V8?

At the very least you'll need a Chrysler tranny and a beefier rear end. The six rear is the AMC model 15 which only has a 7 9/16" ring gear. Pretty easy to shred.

Also, front coil springs won't be up to the task of supporting the weight of a V8. I mean, you CAN run the springs, but they'll compress more than usual and handling will be effected.

You're lucky with the Mopar small block as they have the fuel pump on the same side as the AMC six. Also, if it's a '70 model Hornet, you're in luck AGAIN as the AMC Six and SB V8 share the same starter location. If you plan on power steering though, you'll need to extend wiring for the alternator. Early AMC sixes mount the alt on the Driver side. SB V8 has it on passenger side.

Other than that, as has been mentioned you'll need a rear-sump truck pan as AMC's are rear sump because of the location of the steering arms.

Find a 904 or 727 that'll mate to the SB. AMC tranny's in '70 are Borg-Warner sourced. AMC Torqueflites DO NOT share bolt pattern with Mopars.

I've been told the Ford Explorer 8.8 rear is the perfect width for the AMC small body. Some re-welding of the spring perches is necessary. But if you're good at fabricating, stuff a Ford 9" or a Mopar 8 3/4 and not worry about the sometimes problematic AMC diffs.

Sounds like a candidate for an LS swap I mentioned this on the AMC forum to see if anyone had done it when I had a chance to pick up a later model AMX and got so I know how they are over there lol In your case, a friend of mine in HS had a Javelin with a 360 mopar in it and I think he used a truck oil pan IIRC

Why? Because I have a built 340 sitting right here and I have no AMC engine.

340's are fine in a small car. I liked my 340 swinger. Should be able to make it fit. How much biggger was the AMC 390?

you could sell the 340 and prob buy all the parts including an engine to do a v8 swap. I paid 100 bucks for my 360 amc off of ebay...bulltear makes a conversion mount to run a v8 with a 6 cyl crossmember. ill try to answer some of your questions also. the explorer rear is a good candidate but one tube needs to be shortened as one axle is longer than the other...luckliy you find another short axle and you get a set of ford axles that work once you shorten the tube...95 up explorers were also disc brake and came with good ratios. also a body or c body mopar will be close, or early mustang, monarch granada or versailles 9 in.

there will be wiring mods, iirc you have to run a non oil filter relocator like from a truck, radiator wont be up to the task if its a non air car, so find one from an eagle with a 3 row and flip the straps arounds bolts right in, starter is on the driver side in a mopar pass on the amc so you will need to run some cables nbd...is it doable def, will require some work tho...
