K1 rods use torque and ANGLE. You use a preset torque spec, then use a angle guage to properly set the stretch. Its a very good system. Rod bolt stretch is still the preferred method, but I have never had an issue with torque and angle method, which I still use for all K1 rods.

Didn't know that, the last 2 engines I dealt with I had assembled by the engine machine shop due to time constraints. Todd do you also have to cycle the bolts X number of times before the final torque/angle set ?

The U.S. Army uses the same torque angle method on some of its really expensive and crititcal bolts on the Apache and Blackhawks. Tim

Do they use K1 rods?

I do a lot of torque to yield bolts, mostly in blind holes like head bolts and main bolts, I've just never seen that on a rod bolt.

Competition Wedge, thank you for confirming what I have said. You are exactly correct. The sheet K1 Technologies includes with their rods gives a set torque and a angle to pull beyond the torque number, to tighten the ARP 2000 bolts. A "Representative" at K1 Technologies told me, on the phone and in separate emails, they did not have any specification for no "Torque/angle."

We have sent the broken rod and bolts to the supplier and they were sending them on to K1 Technologies. I am not expecting K1 to do anything especially since I have had several conversation with the "Representative" there. I only want to be sure that anyone here using the "I-Beam" rods with the ARP2000 bolts check the tightening of the bolts and then double check them before you put the oil pan on and close up the motor. As all of us know engines are expensive to build and a bolt in a connecting rod coming loose does tear up a lot of parts.

There have only been two people at K1 ever since I have known them, and Tom certainly should know what his tech sheet says,,,I dont understand that response at all. Oh well...just so that you dont think your losing it or going crazy...here ya go:

My Eagle H beams use the same listed ARP 8740 bolt. The stretch spec is the same but mine say 63 ft/lbs with out an angle. I still don't think angle is an accurate way to torque a rod bolt when you can measure the stretch.

Why don't all rod manufactures that use the ARP2000 bolts, specify a Torque angle if all the rod material is the same 4340 steel?
