Just curious how frequent everyone changes their plugs. At $75 a set they're not quite as easy to just pitch after 8-10 runs like I used to.
I'm thinking in general a 10-11 sec car on race fuel blah blah blah. Just curious of everyone elses practices?
Thanks.

If the A/F ratio at idle, part throttle, and WOT is dialed in, it's a waste of money to throw them away after 10 runs.........I run mine all season......On Chad Henderson's car, Monte put 23 consecutive passes on the car, running 4.60's-4.80's and never even had the plugs out......

If you can't handle the truth, you're living a lie.......

Once a year. I'll blast them off to get a fresh read if I have made any changes that may effect the AF ratio. I do pull them every 20 runs or so, just to look at them and I usually run a comp test while they are out. I'll yank the valve covers at the same time just to inspect the valve train. Probably over-kill, but it keeps me in my comfort zone

Wow, guess I am set on plugs for life then. I've never had any that were suspect or gained or lost et and always an appropriate tan color, no AF monitoring stuff but not concerned. Don't know when/where I heard the routine I've been using just assumed it was standard practice. Be a little nicer too since changing plugs in a bb a-body sucks.
Thanks.

Years ago I used to put new ones in at the beginning of each year. Then I realized there was nothing wrong with them and now I do it every two years (~300 passes), and save those plugs for emergency spares. I think a set of 8 costs $25-30.

With todays MSD/electronic ignition systems, plugs are good for several years and 100's of runs. I have found an electrode burnt off on my old 572 Hemi will no obvious ill effects. I found it when running the valves, as you have to pull the plugs to get the valve covers off.

When I started racing (age18) in 2002 my dad went nuts saying we had to find them damn J11Y's. I called all over the country for those things cuz dad said the 440 never ran so good. I switched to the superceeded number, rj12yc I think and never stopped catching crap.
You old guys and j11y's

OLD guys ? .. ...whatchootalkinabout ? ...

In 79 .... I was 6 years old(turning 39 next year) ...YEAH - that's the ticket ........

Those plugs sure have never missed a beat.... I had my 62 going 5400 in high gear with a 2.76 gear on I-94 in front of Metro Airport some years back.

But I do remember those days when I was a Berri Bum ..and had to change plugs every week going to Milan and Telegraph.....

But THEN ....... J-11Y's were only 59 cents each ...and Sunoco 260 was 30 cents per !

And Fred ......what DOESN'T he have ? ...

I am still running the same plugs that were installed when engine was on the engine stand. This is the beginning of third season on this engine. I use Champions in my 915 BBM heads. You can't get cold J series plugs anymore but Champion part#587,[H8C]is a good cold plug for iron big block heads.

I ususally change mine every spring when I change the oil. They never look bad, so this year I just left them in.

I do them as needed. I haven't had the chance to run this year so they have lasted longer. Maybe thats the secret.

I was with a friend when he was dynoing his S/S Hemi, it was down on power from previous years, so when we checked the valves I looked at his plugs and asked him how old they were. They were a season old but looked good, so we changed them anyways, he picked up the 40-50 hp he was down. I change them often. Dyno
