Clean aluminum with waterborne wax and grease remover, never with lacquer thinner or reducer. Sand with 80 grit DA paper, reclean with waterborne wax and grease remover, wait 30-60 minutes and apply a epoxy primer. I personally use Southern polyurethanes epoxy primer. www.southernpolyurethanes.com Hope this helps! Then paint!

I use 220 grit and wipe with MEK or Acetone and a brown scotchbrite pad, and depending on what paint you want, if its laquer, dust it with zinc chromate first, if wanting to use eurothane or epoxy, Dupont DP40 or 48 is self etching and works great. I use it on aircraft skins all of the time.

Use this stuff, it'll make sure the aluminum is ready for paint.
