Im posting for my brother who picked up a Turbocharged ... Pinto... really cheap but the engine is a rusty basket case and after sitting since about 87 or so th turbo needs a rebuild. He is convinced that he can do this as ther appears to be just 4 parts to the whole assembly but....neither on of us knows how to get this thing apart
Does anyone on this site have experience rebuilding turbos
I already told him we live in a throw away society and A mechanic I talked with along with a local shop both said they just repplace them w/new
He's determined to rebuild

He needs to have it rebuilt or replaced.
It's pretty easy to remove the bolts and pop the housings off. It's even easier to break the bolts off in the turbine housing.
In order to access the bearings you must remove the compressor wheel from the turbine shaft. Here's the assembly removed from the housing:

The "nut" in the center of the turbine wheel is ground to balance the assembly. Get that wrong and the turbo will self destruct. I doubt you want the debris going into your engine.

This is the kind of stuff you can find inside:

Yea I told him to have it rebuilt but he has it partly apart now, all housing bolts out and 1 turbine removed, I kno a photo would prob help and will try to get one tomorrow.
He thinks it just needs new bearings and he may be right but wher would you buy those for a 70s or 80s model turbo oh and the seals/shims
Feets those are great photos, thanks

Remind him that small turbos generally run between 100,000 and 130,000 rpm. Any little mistake he makes is magnified by a huge margin.

Stuff it all in a box and take it to your local turbo shop.

A Pinto with a hot 2.3 turbo would be a screaming machine.

I'm surprised the turbine housing came off....I had a lot of trouble with mine and they hadn't sat around in that condition. You have to be very careful not to bend the shaft when taking the housings off.....

Here are a few photos, my guess is you use a tube smaller than the bearing to push this out th other side, ok after removing snap ring, then bearing will come out this side, back plate will be free now also, it's not stuck.
