Any of you guys done this????? Is there a kit to buy or just square tube, aluminum angle & hinges???

I don't want to buy a new trailer & alot of the ones I have looked at don't have an escape door.

Don't know if anyone else has shopped for used trailers but some people want alot of $$$ for 10 year old trailers..

Any input??

My local trailor place refused...I want one in mine, but they won't put it in. Says its not framed for one...I also assumed you could put one in like a window in a house, what do I know.

Its easy,I put in all my windows in my 44 foot goose, 1 inch square tube works perfect.Build a frame and install a emergency exit window, pull two leavers and the whole window pops out. Some times you can find them used at camper dealers (warranty for small defects like dents and scrapes)I gave 25 bucks each for all mine, there out there you just have to hunt.

He is looking for an escape DOOR , one you open so you can open the door of the car to make it easier to climb out .

Sometimes there are jobs that take way more effort than people imagine. Rather than quote what would sound like a ridiculous price they just give a reason for not doing it.

I've put a door in a trailer I owned. Yes, its like putting a window in a house - frame header, etc.. But you also need plates to run between the studs for both the hinges and the lock - the studs themselves have no strength. Its easily a full day job or more - particularly if you have to build the door. Personally, if I were doing it for someone they'd be into $1000. easily by the time it was done.

Why not just install a winch so you won't have to open the door in the trailer?

sorry must have miss read,But it is still the same just welding, get some tube and some .040 alum and make it.But for all the work a winch would be easier and cheaper.
Here are my windows anyway

I installed one in mine and it was easy. The 1x2" tubing was installed on 12" centers so the material i cut out for the opening i reused to picture frame the new door. Screwed it in with some sealer and was done. Approx (4) hours total.

Depending on the trailer, its construction, where the load is carried, and the location of the escape door to the axles and the hitch, I can see that piercing the solid outer skin might causing buckling issues even with a modest door frame. Furthermore fed regulations have been greatly increased lately on trailer designs on the engineering and testing the feds require (way overkill IMO). To have a company modify an existing trailer opens them to many legal liability issues, and not likely worth the potential hassle. Any company qualified to do it, likely won't, and any who will, might not be qualified. A good analogy is the fatigue structural failures on the liberty ships in WW2.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

I figured MR P would have done this before.. Didn't you build your own enclosed trailer???

I was thinking that I could cut out a 54" hole & keep it square & just re use the cut out to use as the actual door after adding structure. Take some square tube to connect all the cut uprights where the material was cut out.

The only thing I was concerned about was the hinges... would I have to connect 2-3 other up rights with square tube to support the hanging weight when the door is open??

Yes I did..... you double up the hinge side with
studs(metal) header off the top... I used alum angle
as trim... have you ever put a door in a house...
same as a door or window... the main frames under the
floor is the load carrying ... at least it is on mine

No I have never put in a door or window... When I work with wood it always gets messed up...Even when I cut twice & measure once.... At least with metal I can add on material... unlike wood.

THanks for the advice
