The fun has begun!!!!!!My goal is to have this finished by spring of 2012. I hope I make it. Body work is just getting under way. It is being handled by Vance Cummins out of West Michigan. My project is a 70 Charger R/T 440-4 speed. FJ5 with white bucket/console interior. I do not have the matching # drive train so I am going with a 440-6 instead. 70 440 HP Motor is done and ready to install. I will try to post every few weeks with some progress photos. The first few are shortly after I dropped it off for start of body work.

Roof skin was removed to have it chemically stripped. Someone along the line DA'd some of the outer panels and never primed them. The metal was pitted so we chose to strip the roof. Also replacing the upper cowl with a mint original. It is laying in place in this photo. Mine had some dents, dings as well as some rust thorugh in the lower window channel.
You can alos see in the photo that someone robbed the Z bar mounting bracket and part of the frame rail with a cutting torch. They also removed the 4 speed hump and a large section of the DS floor pan. This will all be repaired shortly.

Trunk lid was chem stripped/dipped and has been primed. One very minor metal repair was required on this original lid.

Wow that is gonna be a great project. Have you seen another car like it with its combo of options? It always amazes me when you wonder what other cool cars were "parted" out back in the day. Good luck with the resto, I can't wait to see the progress Dave

Time for an update.
I just placed my AMD order for quarters, trunk floor and extensions. The replacement work should get started soon. I hope to have some new photos in a week or so.
Here is the trunk floor before removal.

Someone robbed the 4 speed hump and front driver floor in the past. I purchased a new AMD section for the replacement. Also picked up an original 4 speed hump that will be used.

Stopped at the shop today to see what progress has been made. They are moving along quite well. Here is a shot of the trunk sheet metal removed. They were part way through sand blasting the rails outdoors when some rain blew in.

Quarters have been partially removed. Complete quarters will be put on. However, they wanted to ensure the fit will be good before removing the entire panel. Decided today to go with new outer wheel houses as the lips were not as good as expected on the originals.

Tail panel work is also in progress. Original lower valence is being repaired and will be re-used. Tail panel will require a few patches but is overall pretty decent. We decided today to order new lower valance end caps as the originals were going to need too much repair. There will also need to be a few patch panels made for the bumper reinforcement mounting area. For those wondering the entire car will be plastic media blasted after the sheet metal repair has been completed. They are spot sand blasting where required to make the sheet metal repairs. I am fairly confident this will be a good decision. Doors, fenders, hood and some other items have already been delivered to the media blaster. It is nice to finally see some momentum. I hope we can keep it going.

Been awhile since I last posted. Been making some progress on console restoration and some of the interior trim items. Also about ready to start on the exterior trim polishing and restoration. I will post some more photos soon.

Body work is going slower than I had hoped. The front clip is down to bare metal and the parts look awesome. No rust repair required on the fenders or hood. A few dings to repair but nothing of any significance. Photo #1.

Left front fender...the plan has changed to have the body shell completely plastic media blasted before any more new sheet metal goes on. Should be going out to the media blaster soon.

Body work is pretty much at a stand still at the moment. But thought I would post a few photos of some of the parts I have aquired and been working on. Hope to have some progress on the body work in the near future.

Dash speakers freshly restored. AM 8 track is out for restoration with Big $ Lewis. I should have it back in a month or so. I am having a hidden IPOD jack added but the radio will be stock specs otherwise.

More console parts prior to restoration! Hope to be back soon with more updates on the progress. Looks like my orginal goal to have her on the road in 2012 is slipping.

Full 1/4 panels were chosen in lieu of replacing the lower sections. The lowers were rusted/rotted pretty much from the front of the wheel openings to the rear of the panel. Also had some rust in the areas around the bottom of the rear window corners. With the improved quality of the newer replacment AMD full quarters we opted for this choice verus piecing all the new metal in these areas. We could have gone either way. However, I trust Vance's judgment on this as he is well recognized in the Mopar community as a top notch restorer.

Hard to believe it has been so long since I posted. The body work has been on hold for some time and has finally started to progress again. I am hoping the momentum is just starting to pick up. Here is a photo of the full trunk floor and trunk extensions in place.

Work is continuing on the rear valance and tail light panel. Looks like the AMD lower valance corners are going to need quite a bit of modification to fit properly. Once the tail panel is squared away repair of the outer wheel houses will be completed.

A wise decision, much better to replace the ENTIRE qtr, than play with patches, that regardless of how well they were done, will come back to haunt you many years down the road....it's going to be a killer car when completed

Quarter is being cut to fit and aligned with adjacent panels. Just fixtured in place right now. Looks like the AMD trunk extension is going to need some cut & fit to mate properly to the AMD quarter panel wheel opening area. The outer wheel house lip is also being replaced.

Did the media blaster vacuum/clean it up after they were done or did you?

Did the media blaster vacuum/clean it up after they were done or did you? Think leaf blower rotisserie and you will still have media fall out from time to time.

Hood is in primer and ready for the last of the body work. This hood was mint to start with so not too much left to do on it.

WOW!!! wish i had a project car like yours. The '68-'70 Charger R/Ts are the epitome of muscle cars (imho). ...keep the updates coming. awsome car,, why full, 1/4s??? they looked decent??
looks great,,, i hope you got a "set" price on all the metal work.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/whistling.gif" alt="" /> instead of by the hour.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/whistling.gif" alt="" />
jc Full 1/4 panels were chosen in lieu of replacing the lower sections. Good call going with full 1/4s. I did the patch panel thing on the '68 Dart 20 years ago because full 1/4s were not available (except $$$$ NOS). It held up well, but have recently installed AMDs full 1/4s...so much nicer.

Great to see the update ! Wondering how things were going with this car, sounds like it's been a long road..
Hey Paul! Hope all is well. It is amazing how much time has gone bye since the start. I hope the final assembly phase goes quickely. It would be great to have it on the road in 2018. Fingers crossed!!

Some more progress......all under-hood stuff is installed. Brake system, fuel system, Dana 60 and most all of the rear end of the car is completed. Hope to have it rolling on rear wheels by Saturday. Going to get the engine dyno'd in a few weeks and then hope to install the engine and front suspension shortly thereafter. Slow and steady!!!

More progress today. A special thanks goes out to fellow Moparts member and friend Mark McDonald. With his guidance the Charger is on all 4 wheels for the first time in several years. I am hoping to keep up the momentum and get a few rides in this year. Finger crossed!

A couple photos from last week. Windshield and rear glass installed. Dash and headliner installed. Now on to side glass, carpet, door panel and seat installation. I hope to get car back to the painter in a few weeks for final cut & buff, touch up and finishing C stripe (original upper stripe was too short). If all goes well.... I will be done by Christmas.

Lot's of time to work on the car in the last few weeks. Interior is coming together nicely and I finally installed the bumper/grille assembly. A couple more weeks and I think I will finally have this project knocked out.

Front buckets, console, kick panels and door panels installed. Hope to have complete interior done soon. Working on resolving a driver side rear window regulator issue.

very very very nice Charger project sir. Looking forward to seeing more progress. If you would like check out our build, a '66 Charger 383 4bbl. Title of the thread is "So It Begins, 1966 Charger Restification."

OK, I have to ask. What are the two reverse lights for next to the ash tray? Reverse lamp and seat belt warning lamp for deluxe seat belt option. That was my first thought, very cool

Interior finally completed.
Just a few more details to knock out and then back to the painter for touch ups and final cut and buff. Hope to have a test drive done soon as well.

Well....after more than 9 years I will close out my project here on Moparts with some final photos. Only put a few miles on so far. Just some tuning and adjustments to finish. Overall, very happy with the outcome!
