another thing is proper coolant mixture.it should be 50/50.a high concentrate of coolant will cause high temp.i have used flex fans and shrouds since forever and never had a problem with 440's stock or not, auto or 4spd.a good rad and proper fan spacing is all that's needed.
I use more of 75% distilled H20 and 25% antifreeze with a bottle of Redline water wetter as well.

What PSI radiator cap are you using? The higher the better according to Mopar Action. 16 is normal but E booger says 20 is fine if everything works well. It raises the boiling point of the coolant if I remember right.

Got one of those caps with the temp guage built right in it made by Mr. Gasket. I thinks it's a 16 or better.

Grade 8 I'm pretty sure. Nope I just looked Grade 5 5/16-18 X .75" long.

I noticed mine needed 1.25 inch long bolts. The ones that came with it are .3/4 inch though. The P.O. had to put in some spacers to get the pullys to all line up for some reason that i don't understand.

dang Stu! sorry to hear about your luck! how close was the fan to the radiator before you drove it?
if you're getting a lot of movement, how are your motor mounts/Trans mount? are they letting your engine move around to much when you put load on it from driving?

You know i found i have to have the main fan pully shimmed out about 3/8" to make the other pullys line up and that's exactly how much the fan is hitting the radiator of course. The flex fan i was using did not have that problem though so i never got into why it all is like this?

Airflow is the problem here, but an (overly) advanced camshaft can cause hot(ter) idling aswell Was the cam degreed properly in your motor?
No idea at all as it was in there when i bought the car over 10 years ago. All i know is it is way too much duration for a mostly stoch engine.
Ok so i got the radiator out and i think i will look for a new one now anyway.

Take your time and get it figured out. I got advice and help from jbc426. My 26" was recored to a 4 row and we got enough clearance. The factory thermal fan works great. Fresh coolant and 180 superstat. The extra row could increase how close it is.
Well i have it all apart now and going to try and replace as much stuff as i can while the engine bay is open.
I hope to find a direct fit radiator that has increased cooling as wel as no extra width if that is possible??
