Stu, what size radiator 22 or 26 inch? And I would use a 7 blade fan with clutch. As for your temp rising when at idle in hot weather, you are not getting enough air flow and an electric fan set up with a manual switch should cure that issue. I have a few factory fans avaialable let me know what you plan on doing as I can more than likely hook you up with the needed parts.
I have the stock 22 inch version. So far never had a problem around here but when i hit the really warm climates it gets hot too quick. Now as long as i am doing say over 30MPH i am fine in the heat it's just slow moving that does me in.

The 69 manual calls for radiator to front of fan gap to be from 3/4" to 1-1/4" The closer you can get your fan to radiator the more air you will draw in through your radiator which will help your overheating problems sitting in traffic.
Ok so you do want the fan as close to the radiator as possible then??
I had to move mine back a little bit as when the blades flexed it hit the fins of the radiator so i know it can not go any further than it is now.

Stu, an electric fan would be the easiest way to deal with the problem. If all is good at speed then the electric fan is the answer. I have my original 26" radiator that is sitting on the shelf that is yours to use if you want. If may be all you need to take care of your cooling issue at idle, if it works then a bigger radiator is in order. Let me know if you want to give it a try and I will drop it off.
You know Herb at one time i was going to go with the 26 inch but if my opening was only 22 then i figured the extra area would not be used efficently?? So i had the originl just cleaned out and rebuilt maybe 5 years ago by the gur in Pacifica.
I am leaning towards a front mount puller electric fan on a switch that i can control from inside the car.

Has the radiator been re-cored at any time or is it original?
A radiator shop can check the flow through it to make sure it doesn't have any blockages.
Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

My dad's Super Bee has a 22' radiator in it with a 7-Blade fan and a fan clutch and I never recall the motor ever getting hot. It has been driven to LA and to Sacramento a few times and has always stayed cool. I agree with Herb, 7-blade fan with a fan clutch, or an electric fan with a switch should work just fine.

Since 99% of the time the engine runs perfectly cool, i think i will look into the electric fan option. I always wondered though does the phyical mass of the fan in front of the radiator stop some air flow when it's not being used though?

That is what I would wonder about, never know until you try it.
But if I were you, I would reinstall a 7 blade fan and clutch. I'm almost sure that would solve your problem without any load on your electrical system and won't block any air flow. My

Yes, the mass of the fan will partially block airflow at highway speeds...Just how much varies...The trouble I have with running the pusher fan on the front of the rad is the noise at highway speeds...It'll spin backwards and whistle when not engaged...Very annoying to me...A good thermal clutch with a 7 blade fan complemented by all the incoming air being forced through the rad by adding air dams and blocking the charge from going around would be my first attempt...

The car never had a clutch fan on it from the day i bought it 10 years ago. I did think of going back to a stock fan clutch but since i never had any problem around here i always put it on the back burner. Now that i want to hit some father off shows i am trying to get all these issues straightned out.
So I guess you can still buy a direct fit clutch fan than??

Looks like MP sells the kit with a 5 blade fan and not 7 though. Is that a major difference in cooling capabilties?
