SO after figuring out my fuel gauge issue the other day, I removed the whole dash from the 73 satellite. I completely stripped it down so I can clean/paint it all.

When I removed the main harness that connects to the pins on the board, two pins came with it. I really didn't even pull hard. I do remember way back (20+ years ago) my dad talking about the dash lights being intermitent. Well, I think this was probably broke alread as he apparently had done some work under the dash at some point because I am missing a few screws here and there.

So do you think it is possible to solder new pins for the two broken ones? if not, guess I am circuit board searching.

Shouldn't be a problem if you can find pins. Put the heat to it only long enough to make the joint - too much heat will lift the foil off the board.

I have soldered the pins to the board and in really messed up board I soldered a wire to the circuit board and bypassed the connector for that 1 wire all togehter. Nobody will see it unless they are under the dash.

Thanks guys. I have some experience with the soldering so I will figure something out. I am with ya, nobody will see it.

Remove the part of the pin that is still in the board. Push the pin in from the back side. Insert a small nail that is large enough to expand the pin to fit tight in the board. The nail must be cut so that it is flush with the back of the board. Solder the front (pin) side of the pin to the board.

if he doesn't have one of your boards to sell already, he will fix yours copy it, and send you a new one.

Jim, great idea and thank you. Sounds like that might be a plan i will try.

Wow, I would have never thought anyone made these. he actually shows one for mine so if the repair doesn't work, I will get one of his boards.

Thanks

I've done it before. The trick, as is usually the case with soldering, is to clean off the oxidation so you have clean, fresh metal to solder to. The cleaning can be done with Scothbright, sandpaper, steel wool, a good wire brush, etc. Chemicals usually leave a residue that cause problems.

I've replaced a lot of similar pins on lots of things. As said, clean the contacts and resolder. The pin connections are very weak mechanically. A lot of the time when removing the connector the pins take part of the board trace with them. Relace the pin and try to swage (make the pin fatter at the bottom) before you solder it, to give it more mechanical stability. If the trace has been torn away you need to wrap a small gauge wire (24-28) around the end of the pin and solder it to the trace, (don't trust solder only to fill this gab it will become intermittent with vibration). For added stability after soldering add a small amount of epoxy on both sides of the pin to keep the pin from pulling out again.

Jim

I had a pin break on my 65s dash years ago.I took a connector from an old fog light fit it in the harness and had enough sticking out so it contacted the board where the pin used to be.It touched the board and worked for probally 20 years till I replaced the dash.Rocky

Here's another way that will work - I just used a piece of solid copper wire used to wire household light switches.

It's the same diameter as the circuit board pins, and a lot sturdier.

It's the pin on the right (bottom) of the attached pic.

Just solder it in.
