Does anyone here run an engine oil cooler? If so how did you do it?

I am interested in seeing how it is done with a stock style oil pump.

You can do it like the factory did. They took oil out the back of the block and then just dumped it back at the fuel pump.

Oh that is a neat idea. Does anyone have any pictures of that setup? (or any others)

does using that small size of line do anything compared to using one from a filter base adapter

Wouldn't the best way just be to buy an oil filter relocation kit and buy an oil cooler and splice the two together? This way the oil gets cooled after it's pumped but before it hits the rest of the engine. You could do the whole thing for about 100 bucks.

I don't have one but its on my things to do list. My plan is to use an oil filter sandwich adaptor which routes the full oil flow through the cooler mounted in front of the radiator then back the the filter base and oil circuit. Summit lists several adaptors for MOPAR. I would probably use 10 an lines.

This is also a handy way to plumb up an oil accumulator - also the approach recommended by Accusump.

An additional element that can be added is a thermostat which bypasses the cooler when the oil is cold. They are available built into the sandwich adaptor or as seperate elements to be plumbed in.

I'll be watching this post for ideas and comments.

That is exactly how I was thinking about doing it but I didn't know if there was a better way to go about it. Sounds like it is the way to go.

I would like to put an oil temp gauge in either before or after a cooler to keep an eye on the entire system. Probably overkill though.

I use the stock mopar oil cooler off a 88 gran fury cop car that had a sb,but have it on the 440 now also

it hooks a line right to the oil sender passage with a hard line and fitting, then turns to high presure rubber hose, then back to a hard line

has a tee for the carb choke relay and a stock oil sender to dash
another high pressure hose/hardline with a flar fitting/bushing.short 1/4" steel nipple/pipe fitted to a hollow fuel pump bolt

not sure about the mopar hollow fuel pump bolt, but you can still get the hoses at napa,I used some seel line and comp fittings to plumb it to fit the truck

the cooler is a stacked plate style and is rather small looking, but disapates a lot of heat, this could be replaced with aftermarket and larger capacity

the hollow bolt is the key to the hook up,I have only found it in the JY on cop cars from the mid 80s

Right, the hole in the hollow bolt has to be small enough to keep the oil pressure at a reasonable level. If the there isn't enough flow resistance in the oil cooler path then the oil pressure drops too much.

You wouldn't happen to be able to get a picture of the fuel pump bolt would you? If you could I would greatly appreciate it!

I have a setup thats a bit different than most. I have the heat exchanger style cooler that uses the cooling system to stabilize oil temps. These are a bit expensive new, but can be found on ebay at a good price. If you run a cement filled block these are good for getting the oil up to temperature and holding it steady. It can be seen here on the upper radiator hose.

If your interested (PM me)I have a sandwich style oil cooler adapter I'd let go for cheap. It has 10 An fittings with it. I ended up going with an remote filter, so this ended up on the shelf. -Tom.

here are the pics of a stock cooler and lines

note the hole size in the hollow bolt

and the double tee is the way it came with the 2 senders as it came out of the block

hollow bolt/pipe nipple/invert flare fitting

stubs it out from behind the FP for the high pressure/hard line return

its for longevity at sustained idle time lubing the fp ecentric,t-chain,lowering oil temps and oils at full psi in the heavy duty cooling package on cop cars

whats funny is this 88 gran fury 318-4v cop engine had a windage tray and a 4 qrt car oil pan/90* oil filter adaptor but would take 5.5 qrts to read full when lines were flushed out with oil change
