I have a long shaft and make around 800 hp. I was really close to critical speed with the quoted chrome moly shaft, and Mark Williams talked me into a mild steel 4 inch. I used to pass through a critical speed with the 3 1/2 inch shaft, but the 4 inch is nice and smooth through the whole range, and that was up to 7400 rpm at one time.

Not to hijack this, but what kind of ET gains are likely to be seen when going from a stock-style drive shaft to a CM or alum. one? The one behind my little torque-challenged small block is the stock one with the 9" u-joint added.

One other thing to consider is damage resistance - if you accidentally hit it with a tool or jackstand, chrome moly won't be affected, but aluminum or carbon fiber may get nicked and then fail at that point.

It's good to hear from all the members that are running above 800hp with different shafts installed in their Mopars. Good information and correct information is hard to come by these days. Thanks

Dyno Tech has built my Alum. 3 1/2 with 1350 joints I have billet front and rear yokes. I should be ok to launch the beast this spring.

I dont think you will see any change... I went moly from
day one so I dont have any comparison... but my way
of thinking is if you go alum you need to add diameter
to get the strength but you also loose a few pounds
but you also move the weight farther out from centerline
so I believe thats a wash... JMO.... rule of thumb
is you need 2X the wall thickness over steel to be
the same strength... but if you increase diameter
it add strength... but again you move the weight
outward which is harder to turn(accelerate)... I'm
sure when its all said and done its all a wash

That sounds backwards - aluminum stays stretched (rods), steel relaxes back.

Wall thickness and diameter are the design parameters for torque. If designed to stay under the fatique limit, the steel will have unlimited life. Aluminum has no fatique limit, it will always fatigue at any stress; it is just a matter of time.

I agree completely. We use a steel shaft on our 3000 HP combination. We used a carbon fiber unit with our 2000 HP nitrous deal.
