Got a little problem with my DD 318 Satellite...

when cruising, it starting misfiring, stumbling and popping through the exhaust. At idle and under acceleration, its fine, its only when you lift off the gas. I tried richening it up a little thinking it was running lean but that really didnt help.

Jets maybe clogged?

Is it a points car or elec ignition?

Facts are stubborn things.

I had a 318 2bbl that gave me problems until I realized that the timing chain was stretched/jumped a tooth. I was trying to time it with a timing light. As soon as I advanced the timing that thing ran like a 440! However, I don't think that is what you have going on here. Might try it though.

Is the vac reading in the 20 plus range if it is too lean. Also heat riser / heat passage on intake open.? Next check and see if the intake gasket is blown out. Also that model likes to get water on dist cap and coil from rain / snow etc from hood and seal or lack of a seal that will give a similar problem. Also sound stupid but make sure your rotor is in one piece. I ran a 318 like that in cold weather for close to month with a broken dist rotor, too cold to bother with and it restarted when it stalled. it was jumping gap that kept it running/ Also elec ignition only I had a control box that did something similar when the tabs on the box rusted away and burnt up the control box

Good call on the timing chain ... and I would also look at the exh heat crossover in the intake being plugged. THAT happens A LOT.

thanks guys, but it was the points. They just out of nowhere jumped about .00015 out of dwell. I really gotta get an electronic ignition in there already!

pertronix conversion

yep, points and a condencer do that..

i ran a pertronix so long I forgot how to trouble shoot points

messed with the 440 in the truck a day and half, then it dawned on me to check the condencer

runs like a top now, deff be getting a conversion for it also, and try the mallory duel points dist i just got

they even have a conversion for the mallory duel point dist

kinda a lost art trouble shooting points and older systems, everybody has to have yada yada yada when it comes to ign systems nowdays
