$295 - Is that what I'm going to have to pay?

I was hoping to to get one a bit cheaper than that, although is is brand new old stock & mint condition. I think I'll save the search on ebay on the hope I find one a bit cheaper. Thanks for the input

I was wondering how the cable would be routed when using a mechanical tach but I found this pic of the Sun Kissed Cuda shows it quite well, looks tidy enough to me.

Here is a great shot of the tach in the Sox & Martin '71 Pro Stock Cuda.

And a couple of the Hemi for inspiration until I get my dual plug Hemi finished.

And more of the car just because it is way cool!

Here are some pics of the '70 Sox & Martin Cuda. As far as ideas, detail & workmanship go, this is one car I should be looking at very closely before attempting my build.

Can anyone ID the brand of the blue cool can and the pale blue ignition coil in these shots?

OK, so this is a bit off topic but it does concern the donor(?) car so what the hey!

Today I had a day off work & as I have an 1/8 mile street sprint (100 miles from home) on Sunday I thought I should show interest in my very low compression cast intake & exhaust, 625 Carter equipped 383 '70 Barracuda. I have converted the 626 AVS to annular boosters a few years ago but it is still a bit flat when I stomp on the gas so I swaped out the .033 (modified Edelbrock) nozzle for a .o43 nozzle today in the hope of minimising the bog.
I did some other small things that needed done as well but I was invited to a full on commercial brewery for a few beers at 5.30 so the car thing had to take a back seat to beer for a change.

The car did miss out a bit tonight but I still have 2 days before the 1/8 so hopefully I'll get it all sorted in time as there is nothing much more I have to do.

Here I am racing at Gore last year.

The bigger nozzle made all the difference, when I stomped on the gas anywhere from idle to well up in the revs there was no bog at all & the car ran near perfect high 14 to low 15 to 1 A/F on the open road & mid 12s under full load so I was very happy with my 40 year old Carter AVS.

Ok back to the original subject . . .

What diff should I run? at present the car has a 8 3/4" with a suregrip & 3.91:1 gears but I think I should be going to a Dana 60 & have been told just about any mid 70's-80's Dodge & Ford 3/4 ton only truck or van will work.

So. . what do I look for, what do I avoid, what brakes, what type of lock up etc, remembering that this car will need to be able to drive on the open road & aroung town when required.

This repro Pro Stock scoop is not all that different to the scoop on the Sox & Martin '71 Pro Stock Cuda & it sure looks great on their car.

Here is a photo from a magazine article on the S&M 70 P/S Barracuda. It shows the cool can - not sure of the manufacturer but it looks like it has a Milodon sticker on it. As for the coil - this is the Chrysler Prestolite coil that was also used on the 68 Hemi Darts & Barracudas and most P/S Mopars until the crank trigger came out. Note on the Mech tachs - there are a couple of different positions that the cable exits the back of the gauge - straight out, to the bottom or side. Not a big deal but something to be aware of - I belive that there are 90º adaptors available. In order to get the correct look (stance) the trend in those days was for a tall front tire - I would look for the tallest tires that you can find in 15". Most street tires (rear) are shorter than the slicks used on these cars and the look is not right. The Dana 60's that are found in trucks must have the housing ends cut off and replaced and new axles purchased - the truck Danas also do not have a provision to mount the pinnion snubber as well - check other threads in the race section on IDing the Dana 60 as there are a couple of different Danas used in trucks - there are also a couple of different axle tube diameters - look for the same as the car Dana - 3".

Coker, makes a good reproduction front tire for this type of stuff. You can either go with a Firestone front runner, or ProTrac's. They are sold through Summit. Radials just do not look "correct" for this type of build. Also I'd go with a 6 pack hood, and cut the lower lip out of the scoop like the 70 Sox&Martin Cuda had instead of the aftermarket ProStock scoop IMO.

New old stock, just like this one belonging to Sox & Martin.

Cheers for the great info & the pic of the cool can, I’m not trying to make an exact copy of any particular car but I do want to keep this project as period correct as my finances and limited knowledge allow so keep up the helpful pics & info as it is of great help to me with this project. The cool can in the pic has a certain look about it that dates it quite well so that’s what I’ll look for but I won’t get too stressed whether it is red or blue or which knob/ handle the lid has, as long as it looks similar to the one in the pic & preferably a brand that was used on this type of car.

The Chrysler Prestolite coil you identified, I may end up using a similar looking coil/s painted that shade of blue to look like the ones used back in the day. I think it is all these details that will hopefully make my car a hit rather than a miss with what I’m aiming for.

I won’t know how the cable attaches to the Stewart Warner tach I bought today for at least a month as I use a slow (but cheap) means of freight from the US to my home in New Zealand. I may need to ask you more about this when it arrives & I can see what I actually have & what I need to make it work.

As far as the tyres go I will be using the old bias ply style tyres, I think given time I’ll use 2 sets of Keystone wheels, 15x7 with 27-18” street tyres & 15x10 with 29-30” street tyres for cruising distances & a set of 15x4 with tall treaded front runners & 15x10 with slicks for short runs, shows & drags. I totally understand what you are saying about tyre height & steering clear of radials to keep this thing looking correct.

I have just started looking at the Dana 60 thing & I can see that this is a big deal in itself & there is some major homework to be done before I start committing to anything.

Great pic, really cool paint job!

Do you mind if I post it directly on this thread it so others don’t have to open your attachment?

JERICOGTX

I’ll look into the tyres you mentioned, you are quite right about radials & I can safely say I won’t be going there.

As for the hood/scoop I am still undecided at this point, I like the 6 pack scoop, I like the pro stock scoop & I do like the shaker scoop but due to price I haven’t thought too much about the shaker. If I do go to a shaker it would probably be a cheater setup where the hood is all one with the scoop mounted in as part of the hood, I just can not justify the cost of a full out shaker setup for this car. My dual quad setup might look a bit tame under a pro stock scoop but I could always change to a tunnel ram or just stand proud & say it’s my car & I’ll do what I like!

Thanks Guys for the great input.
