I'm looking for advice on a period correct tach, any input on dates for this lot?

The info I have on this next one is "Sun Super Tach 10000 RPM Blue Line Model SST-801. Dated 11-2-68"

Did the Sun Super Tach II not come out until the very early '80s?

What about these?

what brand & model of tach would be period correct for an early '70s SS/DA car?

Stewart Warner gauges were what most ran back then. They come up once in a while.

More like this one from a 1967 ad?

I'll look through my '69-'71 Hot Rod mags & see what ads I find, Cheers

Most of the RACE cars of this era were using the Jones/Motorola, Stahl or Moroso mechanical tach. These have a cable from the back of the tack into the dist. housing. Of course you had to have the dist. that was conpatable to the cable drive tach. The Sun Super tach that you are showing was the one to have for street cars but if you are going for the accurate race look, the mechanical cable drive one is the way to go.

OK, now thats opened things up a bit, I have never heard of some of those brands living my sheltered life in New Zealand so I'm very greatful for the info. I do have a couple of Accell tach drive distributors that I plan to build a 90 degree twin dizzy setup from so I may be able to run a mechanical cable drive from one of them, I love a challenge!

You just want the tach for the correct period look,,right? I would say any of them would fit the criteria. As far as actually using a tach to shift with,,,I always remember a friend of mine's reply, who was also a low-buck bracket racer, when I asked him "why don't you have a tach in your car?"...He said....."If Butch Leal don't need one,, I %#@&^*% sure don't need one!"
P.S. I DO use one.. I believe the cable drive tach would be the best.

That one in the previous pic is a Jones...

These are the gauges that came right out of my 71 SS/DA Hemi Challenger. The finish on the tach is textured, like a "suede" finish. I can't say these are rare, but I never seen another one like it. It's pretty sweet. The S/W's are

My RoadRunner had that exact same tach in 20 years ago when we got it. Too bad it was broke shortly after removing it from the car.

If your looking for accurate reading from a sun tach forget that, I think I had three back in the day before Accel and they would wander all over at high rpm's. But they looked sharp, still do.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

Sox and Martin used Stewart Warner. The Chrysler race program had the SW 535AH tach listed in their catalog.

Cheers Guys, that's great info, I think I will hold out for a mechanical tach from either Stewart Warner or Stahl/MOROSO they are both great looking tachs, period correct & hopefully accurate!
I think using a mechanical tach will help give my car the serious drag car look I'm going for so even though it will be more difficult to go mechanical I think it will make it more authentic.

Plenty of the Stewart Warner 535AH's on Ebay and not expensive either. They are VERY reliable tachometers,I have 2 in 2 different cars and the one in the Road Runner was bought new in 1972.
