I'm looking to add a transmission temperature gauge to my 72 demon. It has a 727 auto with a tf-2 shift kit, deep trans pan, 2800 stall, trans cooler mounted in front of the radiator and has -6an lines throughout.

I'm going to go with an electric sending unit but I'm not quite sure where the best location to mount it is. Most kits seem to come with a weld-in bung to mount it to the trans pan but I don't have a welder so thats out unless I pay someone to do it.

Any better ways to mount the sending unit? Maybe using one of those manifolds autometer sells?

And where would I want to measure the temperature? As soon as the fluid leaves the trans on its way to the cooler, or after the cooler before it re enters the trans?

I am doing this same thing right now. I had mine welded into the tranny pan along with a drain plug the tranny shop charged me $30 and they supplied the bungs and plugs. I have welders here but for that price it wasn't worth me pulling my welder out. You need to measure the temp from the cooler line coming out of the tranny so you get a true reading of the tranny oil temp if you decide to go that route. I like the pan idea myself.

I have mine measured on the way to the cooler. I am using rubber hose lines, so it was very easy to just put a T fitting in to put the sending unit.

you can buy t-fittings to put them inline with the trans lines,I think B and M sells them, where you want to put them is up to you depending on weather you want to know the temp coming out of the trans or how cool it is coming out of the cooler. I have mine mounted on the pan (welded), you must know someone who has a welder, or you could buy a screw together oil pan drain plug kit and drill a hole in the middle of the plug then pipe tap it, I think most of the sending units are 1/8 inch pipe tap.

The pan is the best place to put it. But I often just get a brass T and put it in the line that goes to the cooler. For average temps it will be about the same as the pan. But it will show a higher temp when loading the tranny heavier.

Just cut the tranny line, put the T in with the temp sender. You will need to run a small wire from the T to a ground in order for the guage to read.

Master, again and still

The one I got out of the summit catalog I think, had a plug that you could just drill a hole in the pan and attach a nut on the backside of the plug. Tighten it up and then put your sending unit in the hole in the middle. No welding at all. I put mine in the pan so I know what temp the oil is going back into the trans. I think the ideal situation would be a temp gauge coming out of the trans and then another temp gauge in the pan. That way you know just how good your cooling is.

I have mine just outside the out on the tranny. I just went to the local ace hardware and pieced together a brass fitting T that I put the sending unit into.
