Glad you posted as I was about to drop about 6 grand on a TKO kit from Hurst. I've been hearing that these TKO's have a questionable feel.

Both the TKO and the 3550 have high rpm/shift issues. There are things that Liberty can do to help this, but they are "wear items" and have to be freshened up on a regular basis. Talk to Paul at Liberty for details - 1-313-278-4040

like i said in your other thread with the video, I've never been able to power shift mine, if I'm driving like a granny, it shifts beautifuly, heck, I don't even need to use the clutch, it shifts like butter.

but if I'm really getting on it, and get the RPMs up, it's like slamming it into a wall.

I've always just figured my bell to crank was a little off spec, but then again...if that was the case, then why does it shift so smoothly below 3,000 rpm?

Anything above a 3550 is tough to shift fast in a heavy car, I believe it's the synchros are just better suited to lighter cars and I would think a heavy car drags the tailshaft speed down quicker between shifts. 1-2 is the worst and it's made even worse by the huge RPM drop even inthe tighter ratio box. 2-3 and 3-4 I've never found bad to shift fast but I think the Mustang guys break 3rd gear a lot.

I have a Tremec in my Cobra Replica and I've just gotten used to having to shift it slower, I took the short throw out and put in the original backwards mustang shifter to remind me that I'm not driving a slick shift 833 or even a top loader.

My experience with a TKO-1 is pretty similar to what everyone else has said. I think it's just characteristic of this design. The T-5 in my six cylinder Mustang is actually worse. Of course it has lots of miles and the previous owner buggered the synchros with an incorrect clutch. The 1-2 shift is definitely the worst, everything else is OK, but no doubt about it a 833 [ or a Muncie ] with a properly adjusted clutch and Hurst linkage will out shift one every time. I have seen one guy from New England powershift one, beats me how he did it.

I also await your results!! because of how the TKO-600 shifted in my 4200 lb, big block Dakota, I'm tempted to go with the original automatic that my 70 cuda came with. it's nice banging gears, but I don't know that all that pain of conversion is worth it for a trans that can be a hassle to shift at times.
