Ok, this is about my 1985 D-150, but it is a general electronic ignition question. The wiring is totally hacked in this truck, so I'm just going to start fresh. It was originally a 225 lean burn, but now is a 318 with standard electronic ignition. My main question is: Should I use a 5 pin ecu with a 4 prong ballast, or a 4 pin ecu with a 2 prong ballast. I was told to do it either way, but to be careful if you use the 2 prong ballast as some of the other electronics on the truck may need to use the ballast as well. Which is better and why? I have a bunch of production 5 pin ecu's, but if a 4 pin would be better, that's what I'll do. This is a street vehicle, not a racer. Thanks!!

Use what you have w a 4 terminal ballast. this'll get you up/running in no time. EDIT later you can run a hotter coil/ballast which is where the real power comes from not the ECU which is pretty much just a switch for the coil pri current. At that point in time you'd be subbing in a 2 pin ballast for the .5 side of the 4 terminal OE ballast. That half is listed as a nominal .5 ohms but the last one I checked had 1.6 ohms which is leaving power on the table.
