I'm about to go out and weld them up but then I got thinking about soldering them instead... It would be way easier to work with if tweaking is req'd- but is it too soft?

What happens if you warp the plate?

I welded mine back in the spring and the idle quality hasnt been right since.

I see there is numbers 13L & 13R stamped into the plate- does that have any significant meaning?

Don at FBO sells a plate with 4 mech limit slots. No welding required. The 13 should indicate 13x2=26 degrees mechanical timing

Well that certainly makes sense- thanks!
Now.. Knowing that little tidbit I'm just a little more confused as to what is going on in my dizzy because I set my total to 32 @ 2600 and when I checked the initial it was @ 8
So... I figure I'll bump it to 18 initial but the total only went up to 38
I'm not sure whether there is a reason for that and I am uneducated in it's function or if there is a problem there?
Either way, the slots are welded and it's going back together and we'll see how this works out.

Make sure the slots are allowing the weight locator pins to traverse smoothly. Welding may have distorted them.

As a rough guide and in a factory Mopar dist :

Advance slot distances:

.475 th = 15 deg in the plate
.338 th = 9 deg in the plate

If you have access to a gas welder brazing the slots works well also without putting too much heat to it. Also, keep in mind that most electronic distributors like the Mopar unit will retard about 1 degree for every 1000rpm over about 4K - and something slightly less than that starting around 3500, so when you are playing with advance curves / totals, always use the same rpm when setting the total timing. I usually like to use the 3 to 3500 rpm range ( very few circumstances where you want the curve to be past 3K ). That way I am sure all the mechanical is in, and I am staying out of the "electronic retard" range.

I just put a couple of small 3 mm long tack welds in the center of the slots, the allowable travel of the pins is 6mm. My welds don't touch the sides and there was not nearly enough heat for distortion so as long as I welded up enough travel it should be all good

Current MP distributors are fully adjustable (and made by Mallory) - no welding required. Those "Long Red Plastic things" are guages that you insert into the distributor so you can change the amount of mechanical advance (i.e. slot length) w/o taking the distributor apart.

you stick them in the slot while you adjust. there are diff degrees. They are surprisingly accurate .
