Hi All,
I am finally getting some time to work on my 34 Plymouth coupe project and I am ready to narrow an 8 3/4 for it. My question is , do you center the housing in the car, or do you center the driveshaft yoke/pinion in the car?
TIA,
Arno

Thanks Randy,
I'm thinking the same way. An offset housing would look funny. Mopars I've dealt with have the engine and trans offset to the passenger side lining them up with the pinion. It also makes room for steering. Is there any problem with driveshaft dynamics having the pinion offset? It has to be offset vertically so I wouldn't think being offset horizontally(?) would not be a problem.

If the engine/trans are centered in the frame I would center the pinion also.

One disadvantage of a centered pinion is the need for different length axles but if you're having them custom made that's no big deal.

Hmmm Hemi + manual trans... you shouldn't be narrowing an 8 3/4 at all .

John,
Thanks for the input. The axles will be custom so that will not be a problem. If there aren't any issues with offsetting the pinion to center the housing, I personally would prefer that for looks alone. I'm wondering if anyone has had any problems doing that.
Thanks
Arno

Ya know, I have a Dana 60 that could go back there :^), but I figured it is going to be a street car and the Dana would be overkill. I also am thinking about future gear ratio changes and the ease of the 8 3/4. Who knows, there may be an overdrive somewhere in its future.
Thanks
Arno

Actually, the center part of the housing is pretty well centered from the factory, the pinion is offset in the third member. Centering the pinion will move the center of the housing to the drivers side; hardly noticeable unless the housing is real narrrow.

I called Moser this morning and they agree with John. I will be centering the pinion in the car to match the motor and trans. Thanks to everyone for their input!
