I think it looks better without the caps, JMO though. I've enjoyed following your build too.

Is the kit that you used on your bed a spray on or roll on kit?

it's herculiner. i'm gonna do another coat, when i go back to iowa tomorrow. (bored at the motel, need something to work on) will do the uv protector in the topcoat, to give it a glossy finish. roll-ons are okay, but in reality, nothing is going to give you the durability of a heated, sprayed in liner.

rolling it in, saves money, and is repairable at home. mine has held up well, until i started throwing galvanized fence post pipes into the bed. when the lip on the pipe catches, it will remove a piece of liner.

Oh ok. I know the good stuff like that holds up best, but Im looking at $450 to get my bed done here. I'll just use the roll on rustoleum again.

I used it on the hood, roof, and bed rails of a sunburned F250 that I sold.

Then I helped a buddy do the bed of his GMC Sonoma as well. Put like 6 coats on it after good prep. It held up for about a year and a half until he sold it. It wasn't beat on like a work truck but it did carry military gear, a dirt bike, and random supplies etc quite often. I think for the price, about $50-60 total, it will serve me fine. If I had access to cheaper services or the ability to do it myself, I would definitely go for the good stuff though.

Can wait to see your motor install.

just finished a 1600 mile, straight through shakedown run. sitting out here in iowa again, and had a few issues. up near ocala, the left front caliper locked up, tight. got a new one, and made a roadside repair. (this is why we carry our full toolbox with us. )

drove up through atlanta, and went to ackworth, looking for shoozy. after waiting at glade road for a while, i decided i didn't know who i was looking for. up in the mountains, near the tennessee border, the trans started slipping. bad. everytime i turned to the left, the trans slipped, and felt like it was hitting neutral.

stopped in ringgold ga, and found no fluid on the dipstick. saw no leaks, and went out back. the back of the truck was covered, in fresh wet tranny juice. [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean]!!! asked where a parts store was, and found stapp auto parts. told them the deal, they put it on their lift, and said tailshaft seal was gone. they happened to have 1 on the shelf, and hooked me up. hour later, back on the road.

made it to waterloo, in about 23 hours of driving. truck ran great. front end was tight, and no squeaks, or rattles. steering rack was tight starting, and after 1600 miles, it was no better. the rack is just as tight on the road, as it is stopped. also experiencing some serious oversteer. have to actually fight the wheel to get it back onto the track i was trying to make.

alignment is right. wheel is straight. no pull to either side. a tiny amount of "slop" or freeplay in the wheel when rolling. the wheel turns about a half inch, either way, before the slack is out. not bad, really. this rack is actually harder to steer, than my old hemi superbee, with a manual box. two fisted, full body exertion, when riding in a parking lot, is required. (will make some great looking forearms, i guess)

at lower speeds, experiencing a slight amount of bumpsteer. maybe between 25-35 mph. steering is always a two handed deal, unless the road is smooth and straight. then, i can steer with a single finger.

so, two questions. has anyone found a way to adjust the tension on a rack and pinion mopar performance rack, to lighten up the torque needed to turn it? second, any thoughts on the oversteer? i hit a line in a curve, going 80 mph, and the truck wants to go off the road, into the curve. it takes a serious effort, to point it where i want it to be.

*iowa motel pic for the non-believers.

Umm. Wow. Glad you weren't stranded anywhere. Sounded like a Craigslist story.

got back home, and took front apart again. found two bad ball joints, one on each side. wtf? got them replaced, and steering is almost as easy as a power unit. it's what i wanted (finally) and the feedback is great. needed to work on some wiring, so the panel was pulled apart, to get to some wiring.

interior needs finishing to all black. have the carpet, and dash pad, just waiting for the seat to be redone, with black material to replace the red.

needing to get the fuel pump pulled, i decided to remove the bed this time, instead of just lifting it. 8 bolts, 4 screws and 1 ground strap and it's hoist time. i had removed the taillights chasing down an intermittent brake light issue. january weather in florida, makes this sort of thing a pleasure to do. for my jersey boys, i feel your pain?

hang some towels on the front lip of the bumper, and covered the tailgate. drop a blanket across the front of the bed, and lift. this protects the paint, doing this by myself. lifting it up, clear the fuel filler, and drive out from under it.

got the pump and float deal worked out, and decided to pressure wash everything, since it was all accessible. being almost 80 degrees out, didnt hurt either.

hit the bed with pressure washer and degreaser. masked it all off, and rolled a second coat of herculiner on it, 3 years after first coat.

i used the body line at the top of the quarters, to edge the liner. this offers protection on top of the rails, if needed. rolled on a gallon this morning, then the uv topcoat protector this afternoon.

will give it another day or two, then put the fastback/lightbar back on. all that's left now, is to finish the interior, and drop in the 340. picked up an airgap rpm from the for sale section here (thanks mike), and got a carb from summit. ordering a convertor from smr, and will do a trans kit at the same time.

roll on texture is pretty decent, for a kit. the gallon kit, with rollers and prep tools cost 60 bucks, on the bag. the uv topcoat seems to be black latex paint. it's water soluble, and tastes just like housepaint. i mean smells.

hopefully it does what it claims to do. overall, the herculiner was worth the money. three years of abuse, and i only damaged it by throwing pipes into the bed, and letting the end of the pipes gouge into the liner.

That texture came out nice. Always wondered how good you could get tight corners by rolling and still make it look uniform.
By the way it's zero out as I'm typing this!

is that the stock rear shackle set up on that dak?

looks like the shackle flip on the d150 when done.

and that looks like 43" spring perch centers from here. correct?

Fl is great in winter time.

if you are by yourself, who is under the truck and who is taking the pics? you said the help IN the bed was not helping?

you use a brush, and hit the corners first. dabbing, not stroking, makes the texture the same as the roller. you can run the lip of the roller right up to the edges, if needed. sorry to hear about your broken thermometer. i fixed that, by abandoning the northeast and running for the fishing capitol of the world.

yeah mike, the axle is flipped from the factory. the shackle mounts could be flipped, to drop it lower. i have a drop kit, i haven't done anything with yet.

normally i'd ask the guy next door to help me lift the bed off. he wasn't around, and i wasn't in the mood to lift one side of the bed. i'd have to measure the seats again, don't remember how wide they are, from last time i measured them.

4 helpers keep jumping in and out of the bed, or diving through the open windows, into the cab. everyone wants to go for a ride, nobody wants to help.
