will restricted pressure cooler line cause the front seal to leak. the front pump vent is plugged and a vent has been relocated to the rear of the housing. everything in the trans is new. and a pro trans brake. I just noticed the cooler line is kinked.

Where is it leaking from? The seal?

I could see a kinked cooler line cuasing excess line pressure that could result in a leak.

Fix the line, dry the trans, run it and inspect. If it is around the seal area (as is most common) you may also want to inspect the bushing and the conv snout.

In my opinion no,, several causes are bad pump seal,,torn gasket between pump and housing,,gasket's on the pump to housing bolt's,, and of course the dredded cracked converter hub,,the most common is the seal as it's easy to nick when putting the converter in.

I have replaced the seal twice and it still appears to be leaking from the front. Can't be 100% positive, but it sure looks to be coming from the front seal.

If that's the case then most likley the support bushing in the pump is worn.

Could also be a cracked hub but I'ld start at the bushing.

bill and dartman thanks for the input. I put a new bushing, a new pump gasket, a new pump seal, I checked the hub when I had the pump apart. how many qts with a 8" converter. I have a 1 1/2 qt over size pan.

Hard to say if any leaked out of the conv.

I'ld start by filling till the dip stick shows some red then start the car and check in Nuetral till it's where you want it.

Yes, restricted cooler lines could cause the front seal to leak.

A couple of years ago I was out for a test ride with my new 440 engine and had a problem with a leaking front seal on my 727. I could drive at the highway without any problems but if I stopped and raised the rpm (Turbo Action J-conv) for a testrun it just pissed trans fluid out of the front seal.
After some investigation I found that the front cooling line was bent more than it normally is (stock cooling lines). I just bent it back with my hands and went out for another test and the problem was gone.

I'm not a 727 guru so correct me if I'm wrong, if you plug the front cooling channel (= the output to the cooler), the oil flow from the converter will be to big so the front seal could start leaking, you will have the same problem if the front bushing/bearing have moved and restrict the channel for the oil flow.

The only way restricted cooler lines could cause a leak out of the front would be for the trans to overheat and push fluid out of the vent.

There is also a pipe plug that has been loose in most 727's that I rebuilt, I always wrap it with teflon tape before tightning it

well like I said everything is new inside the trans. I corrected the kink in the pressure line. Then I drained and refilled with 3 qts initially, adding slowly until its was full enough. I do not know. Im going to take it out and take it to my trans expert and watch him fix the problem. Im trying to make it to clay city.

The flow in and out of the converter is behind the bushing which is behind the seal, so that scenario would have to push the excessive flow past the fairly tight clearance of the bushing before reaching the seal which has a drain channel back to the pan.

As stated earlier,a clogged cooler line could cause overheating which might push fluid out the breather but not past the front seal.

I too am curious what would cause this leak. Mine was leaking and when we had the motor out you could see dampness under a couple of the pump bolts. I replaced the rubber coated washers and still had a leak. Pulled it back apart. Converter is completely dry on outside. Looked like the seal around the pump was the problem. replaced the gasket, o ring, seal, pump washers and put back together and guess what??? Yep, still leaking. I have a blanket on the trans and was wondering if it may be blocking the vent and causing a problem???

Did you PRESSURE check the converter? Mine had no visible cracks but 25 - 30psi in the snout and some water around the weld showed a crack that was over 1/2 way around right in the middle of the weld. The firast time I checked I was so sure it was fine that I put a new pump seal and bushing in, moved the vent to the rear, put it all together, tested it, and had to tear it back out again.

I had the same problem. But mine only leaked on start up. Problem was the bushing had spun in the pump housing. I replaced the housing and bushing, problem solved.
