Hey,

I have a '65 Satellite with two-tone gold/brown interior. I want to repaint the gold on the steel dash. The fendertag says P4Y for interior trim code.

Does that de-code into the paint color codes?

I have a DuPont paint chip sheet for '65. I took it to my local paint shop, but when they searched for paint using the codes from the two gold interior options (4658-L Med. Yellow Gold and 9088-LH Lt. Gold), they came up with GM paint colors - not any golds.

Any input to shed light on a workable paint code is appreciated.
Maybe the paint shop is just wrong?
I thought Ma Mopar used PPG paints, not DuPont?

At the paint shop I hand-matched the chip color to a fandeck of PPG metallics, but the PPG metallic flake size is too big. So I'm back to searching for the original paint code.

Cheers,
- Art

Chrysler apparently used the least expensive paint products they could get, and didn't necessarily stay with one mfr. for everything. R-M & DuPont both claimed OEM Chrysler use. That continues today with some carmakers.
A GM color may be close enough to use, especially if you tint it or use a different coarseness of metallic. For my '63 interior light blue metallic, a contemporary Toyota color was actually almost identical, just needed to kill a little of the red in the formula. The metallics used back then were quite fine, as you've noticed. The hard part is getting the low-gloss ("suede") colors & textures right.

Thanks Tops,

Your '63 is probably a lot like my '65 then: I was lucky enough to match up a good metallic brown for the upper dash. We shot a dull topcoat and it has worked out well. I'll take your advice and have a look at the paint shop's Brand (GM, Lexus, Ford, etc) chip samples and just find a current paint that has that finer metallic grain. I'll bring them my ashtray to generate matches.

Best, - Art

I'm not sure if this helps or not. These codes are for 1965 Chryslers but I am sure they are the same for Plymouths.
