A little background 1996 intrepid that occassionally will not shift out of low. Usually will hapeen off and on for a few days and then for weeks will work fine.

Ok the questions
What is the TCM? Where is it? And can I fix it or will need to be a professional? How much?

The TCM uses the sensers on the trans and engine to determine the shift points on an electricly controlled trans. The TCM on your intrepid is on drivers side fender behind the battery. Cant miss it, it has a huge bundle of wires going to it. You can find them on ebay or at pick and pulls for around $50. Its an easy swap.

You could also have a bad speed input sensor, those are like $16 at a parts store and take 10 minutes to change. Screws into the drivers side of the trans, there is a speed output sensor there two and they look very very similar but if your speedo works so does the speed output sensor.

My car about every 2 - 3 weeks will flat line all guages and run terrible. Then when it runs good will not shift until the guages pop back on. So I will be driving in low gear and no guages. then suddenly after time the guages pop on. Then the car runs great for a few weeks.

Might want to check the wires and connections on the passenger side fire wall bulk head connectors. Seen alot with green death there. Living up in the salt belt even more.
