I think I'm having issues with the alternator on my Duster street strip car I bought a "rebuilt" 60 or 65 amp squareback high output stock type alternator for the car when I built it from a local electric supply and rebuilder shop here in Bend,OR. I have had to replace it twice so far in the last three years, it quits putting out 13+ volts I'm sure some of the diodes die and that limits how much voltage it will output. It is probally time to step up to a good, NEW high output altertnator, I'm looking for suggesttions for one that will bolt in or comes with the needed mounting brackets to bolt onto both my low deck stroker and the high deck motors I use in the car. I use elephant ears(both sides) for the front mount front so if you know a good piece BTW, the local shop does replace thier "lifetime" alternators but I'm tired of them not living
EDIT: I checked the output voltage of the alternator at the big wire on the back of the alternator, it was putting out 12.4 V revved up I took it back to the shop that I bought it from, lifetime warrenty, they tested it and exchanged it with no hazzle I'll run it this weekend and replace it next week when the new one, not rebuilt, gets here. I have ordered a new 100 amp direct replacement from Summit, it is a Tuffstuff brand, if I'm remembering the name correctly. Anyone use them? If so how do you like them and how is it working?

ONE WIRE ???

I'm open to what works best and lives It is a street and strip car that I shift above 6400 RPM, depending on which motor is in the car. I suspect the higher RPM is what is causing the stock type Mopar alternators to quit eventually, mine has a stock, small diameter, pulley with a stock size Mopar single groove bottom pulley It shows the alternator charging on the stock amp gauge but the volt meter is showing less than 12.5 volts when running and dropping down to 11.8 volts at idle now I'm looking for advice from those of you who have switch with similar applications

Cab,
I used a denzo 130 amp off a dodge mini van. One wire install with a wire for an idiot light. It has lived to 7800 RPM with no problems so far. If you want one I can have my guy here build it for you and send it out. Let me know...Phill

Actually Cab, I'm looking too. Raced at Firebird last night and my alternator took a dump. It's a less than year old Tuff Stuff Perforance 1 wire 60 amp square back ( fits 61 - 85 Chrysler prod. Summit # TFF-7509RGSP). When you first fire up, works fine with 14 vlts output. When it heats up, can't hardly get over 12 vlts out of it - at any rpm. My first time out in almost a year and very frustrating. I did get a chance to go down the "newly paved" track twice ( spitin and fartin )and it is awesome. Also got to meet a bunch on really nice ADRA guys ( it was one of their points meets ). I'm open to any and all alternator suggestions. BTW, 110 race gas @ the station accross from the track was $7 a gallon. - Sorry to hijack.

Cab,
I just installed a Powermaster #7508 (75a) unit on my 340 over the weekend and I am very pleased with the performance.
I emailed Brady at Powermaster and gave him what I was looking for (75-100a, stock mounting, two field wires, single pulley, no chrome). He gave me the part number and the price and I ordered directly from Powermaster (located in Chicago). Brady had it built on Monday, I ordered it on Wednesday, and I had it in my hands on Friday. Some of the parts houses have them in stock but since he took the time to answer allot of my emails, I wanted to order it directly from them.

I went and ordered the new Powermaster that is both a 12 & 16 volt. It's adjustable. Right now there's two brand new 12v in the Cuda but I have every intention of making the change to a pair of 16v somewhere in the future. I figured this would be my best move for the present.

I have had the Powermaster XS alt CS130 case in my car for 3-4 years. I shift at 7000 and go through the stripe at 6800-6900rpm. So far it has been fine.

I agree, it might be the RPM killing the alternators. You could use a larger pulley to slow it down and life with it not charging at idle, or get an alternator that can take the higher RPMs.
This is why I went with the Denso, they can take 14,000+ RPM (at the alternator.)

Cab, I got a Tuff Stuff 100 amp unit from Summit and I like it.I read on the FBO site that they had great results and it's made in the USA.I got the GM one wire alternator with the Ford style mount as it bolted easily to the motor plate without spacers.

I'll make it easy for you. There's a company called East Coast Electric that specializes in race alternators. There in Jeg's and I think Summit,or you can buy direct.I have the 70amp mini one wire that goes directly to the battery.Even charges at low rpm in the staging lanes.I've had it on there for 10 yrs with no problems.

Mines on order ( actually on B.O. till Oct. 10 ). Also talked to tech at Tuff Stuff about the failure of my 60 amp unit. They said it sounds like a diode or the regulator went out and to send it back with the receipt ( 10 months old ) and they would probably cover it.

The converted "one wire" squareback types that have a small regulator bolted to the back of them are probably the least reliable out there. Those regulators can't take the heat or vibration of being mounted directly on the alt, and the regulators have a short lifespan. Just thought I'd throw that out there for those who want to use a squareback.

Thanks, I needed that.
