I was just looking at our lovely online NHRA rule book and from the way I am reading things a diaper is not required until you get into advance ET running 7.49 or faster am I reading this correct?
Under super pro running 7.50 or slower it states a diaper is permitted but doesn't say required.

That's what I read too. The real question is what percentage of crashes could have been avoided if they had a diaper? $200 sounds like cheap insurance to me.

Also a requirement of certain classes, ie Super Gas, Super Com and Comp. I am sur we will all see a trickle down affect eventually. I know after the hemi had the rods try and get out the side of the block and 155 and there was not a drop of oil on the track I wont be without one again.

DRE made mine. I run stock front suspension and it hasn't been an issue (k member is notched to clear the pan though). The NSS organization i run with had an incedent a couple weeks ago that could have been avoided had the car that lost the motor had a diaper (or if the track was cleaned.....) Luckily no one was hurt and the damage was minimal.

I get the safety argument about having 1 but I am just looking at letter of the way it is written and if I am required to run 1 or not from the way I see it it's not required with me running a bracket super pro car running slower than 7.50.

what so confusing? not required means not required like you don't have to have it 7.50 and upp and permitted means you can have it and they permit it's use

OIL-RETENTION DEVICE
All vehicles running 7.49 or quicker must utilize an NHRA-accepted
lower engine oil-retention device; may use a belly pan in lieu of a
device attached to the engine. The belly pan must extend from
framerail to framerail and extend forward of the harmonic balancer
and rearward to rear engine plate and must incorporate a minimum
2-inch-high lip on all sides. A nonflammable, oil-absorbent liner
mandatory inside of retention device. See General Regulations 1:8.

What he said..Pretty simple if you have a racecar running 7.50 or slower you dont need one. UNLESS you run Comp, Super Gas or Super Comp, they need one regardless of ET.

There are some tracks that are requiring them on their own track rules.

They don't need the down time, nor the cost of clean ups..

I have a russler also. great guy. Good ol racer..

Chris..

Man, it becomes a bit crazy once you`re in the 9`s but it does make tracks/drivers safer I guess. I`m WAY under the 6.39 1/8th mile legal thing w/only a bar already and after my 6.10 I PROMISE I`ll make it legit..........

I hope to participiate in a couple of races where they're required. A diaper wont work on mine but I'm in the middle of a belly pan project which looks like may work well. I'll post some pics when its installed.

This to me is the best approach. You get the benefits of oil control, and improved aerodynamics through better airflow under the car. Might as well extend it forward a bit and add a front air dam under the valance?
Kinda follows the philosophy, nothing rides for free!

yeap they are just looking for every way they can to nickle and dime the small guy to death.
It shows the diaper has to be recerted every year that's as bad as every 2 years on the belts

IMO, it is a good rule and was long overdue. As for the recert only Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and faster require SFI certed diapers. You will be fine with just a sportsman diaper.
